This Colonel is for sure a scammer. I first met him on Zoosk (I believe that is the spelling). Anyway, he asked for $250 to $300 for me to send so we could talk on the phone. The first address he gave me was to send it to a Ghana address, which is a warning. When I said no, he gave me another address somewhere in Kentucky to send it , which I did not do. I understand that military men overseas, especially officers, have various ways to call friends and families and do not need to ask anyone for money so they can make long distance calls. So women be aware. When I asked for his military address and told him I was aware that he did not need to ask women for money, I did not hear from him again. That has been about two weeks. I see, though, that he is still on Yahoo Messenger as col.rickygibbs

I checked the name on the Web and there does seem to be such a person, but I am positive it is not this one, but that he is posing as the real Colonel Gibbs.

Welcome here foxygrandma.

I'm glad you didn't get scammed. Scammers often use the identity of a real soldier/officer when they find their details on the internet.
Could you post the e mails that this scammer has send you? Preferably with the full headers, so that other possible victims can get warned. If you don't know how to get the headers, just ask.

Being a victim doesn't mean you stand alone. We're here to help you.

Hi foxygrandma, thank you for this post. I almost got scammed by this same person. I truly believed him when he said my phone line had to be secured before he could call me. He sent me a email address that I had to send my personal info such as full name, address, phone number and phone service provider. I can't believe anyone would pose as a military person and scam single women like this. I really believed him and wanted to talk to him over the phone. I am really upset because I was starting to have feelings for this person too. Guess internet dating just isn't safe. The sites that I have found he is using is christiancafe.com and matchdoctor.com Appears to be a honest Christian man. Guess you just can't trust people these days. Sad!!!

Welcome to ScamWarners SYR741. Sadly there are people out there that you cannot trust. Not every one on those sites are scammers, but there are plenty of scammers on every social networking and dating sites.

Romance scammers do not ask for money right away. They want you to fall for them and their story, then feel compelled by your feelings to send them money.

We are glad that you found the information posted here. Even though you didn't lose any money, we understand that the loss of trust, your pain and skepticism are difficult enough.

Help us cause him difficulty by posting any additional information he has sent you, including email addresses, profile names and the text of his messages to you. Those are scripts he uses and often people find a scammer here from their script.

If you have questions please post them or send a PM to one of us Moderators.

The Project Honey Pot system has detected behavior from the IP address 205.188.249.131 that is consistent with that of a Mail Server and Dictionary Attacker.

What this means is that the IP is not going to tell you where this person is. It is most likely a compromised server that is being used by spammers and scammers around the world. In fact, if you google it you will see that it comes up as a source for many advance fee fraud emails.

Based on the storyline of this particular scam, the scammer you have been in contact with is most likely in Africa or Malaysia. Since the original poster was instructed to send money to Ghana, that is most likely the scammer's true location.

I searched on whitepages.com the real col ricky gibbs phone number and I am going to call him today to alert him that someone is using his name to scam women. I feel bad for the real col ricky gibbs that served his country and now there is someone posing as him on numerous singles websites. I am sure he will use his resources to track this scammer down and make him pay!!

Your passion is admirable SYR741. I would be surprised if you find contact details for the actual Col Ricky Gibbs. There is not much that can be done by someone who has taken away another's name. Scammers use email addresses that are easily abandoned and not tied to who they really are.

One of the best things that can be done is to expose the scam and the names used in the scam here on ScamWarners. You have done that, thank you!

If you are able to contact the real Col Ricky Gibbs, I would be interested to know what he says to you.

I tried calling the number that is listed on whitepages.com for the real Gibbs (address listed Fort Riley so I think its the real Gibbs since the Army base is Fort Riley). Anyways I left two messages today but not return call. Maybe he is out of town. When I do hear back from him I will post what he has to say about it.

So here is what I know..... the real Ricky Gibbs is now a General, happily married with no kids. His wife says at least 40 other women have called her to inform her someone is using Gibbs name and scamming women. Here are the yahoo screen names he is using. [email protected] and [email protected]
Also uses aol email [email protected] The email address he is asking women to contact to send their personal info to and Western Union money to is [email protected]
He is not contacting me anymore since he knows I know his game.

Oh and some of the things he says to women are.... talks about marriage. Asks for women to start looking for a house for when you can be together. Asks for money for his sick son who broke his arm and also asks for money to buy school books for his son who is in boarding school. He often targets Christian women and mentions how God told him your the one and he knows God brought you together and nobody can tear you apart. If you start doubting him he will say you need to have trust in a relationship for it to work and to trust and pray to God for his direction. He assumes if he talks about God you will trust him and send money. The first time he asks for money is usually to make a "secure" phone call to you and says you need to pay $300 to have your phone line secured so he can contact you.... but once you send money he doesn't call. Its all a scam. He plays on your emotions and is a smooth talker. I hope this info helps someone else out there to stop them from getting scammed.

Ok the plot thickens..... I found this online. http://www.flickr.com/photos/firstinfan ... 211421740/
its a pic of him, his wife and 2 kids. After his wife stated they had no children. Seems odd..... either they are both involved in scamming people or the woman who answered the phone is lying, but why. I am so done with this!!
by Dotti Thu Jan 06, 2011 1:34 am
Of course it's possible you did not get the real General's home, but instead got an accomplice.

It is more likely that you did talk to his wife, and that she chose to pretend they had no children.

Look at it this way.

You realized the truth early in the scam, when you were just starting to get attached, and you aren't out a lot of money--but this has still been a difficult experience for you. Now imagine how you would feel if you had been in contact with this scammer for weeks or months, thinking you had a deep, committed relationship, and you lost thousands, maybe even tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands, of dollars.

Many victims (both male and female) are not only hurt, but they are angry--at times extremely angry. Some don't understand, or simply can't accept that the scammer is not the person in the photos- and they firmly believe that the scammer really is the person in those photos. Some victims have responded with an interest in the real person that can only be described as an unhealthy obsession.

Now imagine that you are the soldier's wife. Your husband's photos have been stolen and used in scamming. Neither of you has done nothing wrong, but you have become victims of these scammers too. In spite of his level in the military, there is nothing your husband can do, because the person(s) behind the scam are doing this anonymously from another country, where he has no power, and law enforcement is notoriously corrupt. You have received dozens of phone calls from many strange women--some of them may have been nice, some very upset, but others have been abusive, possibly even threatening. Others have called multiple times and it doesn't appear they are going to give up. In the end, you don't know who these women are, or how angry, frustrated, or emotionally unstable they might be.

If you were receiving these calls, would you willingly be giving information out about your children to strange women, knowing that if they turn out to be unstable, they could try to get to your husband through them? An unstable, angry person may very well become a threat to the children. Wouldn't you do everything you could to keep your children from facing possible threats or harassment? If these strangers who are calling don't know you have children, the easiest way to keep the children out of this mess is to pretend they don't exist.

If I were in the wife's shoes, I would probably do the same thing myself, right after I changed to an unlisted phone number and put in a new security system. I honestly give her credit for being willing to talk at all--many people in her shoes wouldn't, and who can blame them?
