Firstly, great idea for a site. Not sure how many victims will use it but lets hope the word spreads.

Bug:
On the main SW index page, /index.html
near the bottom is the text "You'll find most of the useful material in our forum. ". The forum link is wrong.

Suggestion:
I noticed that there was nothing to say something to the effect of not using your real name when signing up, or if there was I missed it.
I'd have thought it as important for victims to not reveal themselves as it is for scambaiters, since scammers can easily check and see if their victim has twigged. Whilst this will probably make the scammer just leave them alone, I think it'd be better to be safe.
Also, if a victim is encouraged to stay 'masked', they will likely feel less embarassed about posting.

On that theme, perhaps you could find some victims and ask them to post what happened to them... or link to news articles relating to it all. That way newer victims can relate to something and can feel less embarrased about what's happened to them.

Last suggestion for now, the examples of the different scams are really very good, but perhaps it'd be a good idea to post sample emails too, so that possible victims can relate some actual text. What I mean is because these victims get so engrossed in the story spun to them, to show them that it's a standard email script would boost your chances of convincing them more than generalising about what might be in that script... if you see what I mean.

Edit: Oh, another suggestion. Once the site gains some steam, it might be an idea to try and set up a stats section showing, e.g. how much each victim has had taken off them. This would help convince victims that are still in the early stages just how much they are set to lose.

Those are some really good suggestions, thanks Johnny5. :) An update on where we are with them:

The forum link is fixed, and we are starting to populate some of the specific scams with examples. We have a small but hopefully growing section for victims to post their stories, and each of the specific scams already has one or two news items linked, along with a thread specifically for news here. I like the idea of some stats, but as you say, maybe when we are a bit older than a week. :) I'm going to see what we can do about advising people not to use their real names at the point at which the sign-up screen is reached. In the meantime, I have added something to the welcome section here.

we are starting to populate some of the specific scams with examples.

What I'd add to that is to put the various examples all in one closed and uninterrupted thread (i.e. one with just examples and no other posts), otherwise the forums may become overrun with them making it harder to spot victims (plus if they're not sticky they'll slide off the first page).

I like the idea of some stats, but as you say, maybe when we are a bit older than a week. :)

That was a bit of an afterthought really, I'm a bit of a stats junkie. In reality it'd probably be very difficult to compile anything useful with any accuracy.

I'm going to see what we can do about advising people not to use their real names at the point at which the sign-up screen is reached. In the meantime, I have added something to the welcome section here.

You can modify the registration text. My phpbb is rusty but I'm sure someone knows where it's kept. I think in reality most people would be too embarassed to use their real names, but it's a just in case.

Loads more suggestions. I'm a bit obsessive about organisation and this stuff just comes to me.
Having set up a few sites myself I know the sheer amount of time and work it takes to get everything straight, so these are just ideas that you can implement if you like, when you have chance :)

Custom page titles and meta keywords / description will help you get into search engines better. Keywords like "scammed, victim of scam, advanced fraud fee, victim of fraud, victim of scam, scammed and scared" and all related stuff that people might search for in a search engine.

I know there are a few threads dotted around with advice on what to do, but I didn't see one (though I admit I didn't look all that hard) covering the whole embarassment thing. To me, one of the best ways to get victims asking stuff and talking is to really reassure them that they won't be judged, that we have any idea who they are, and through anonymity the scammers won't either, that there are nnn thousand victims a year of victims... stuff like that. Stuff that helps put them at ease basically, since I would imagine some would be scared or just shy. Perhaps link to news stories where otherwise intelligent people have been taken to help with any "I'm so stupid" factor.

Also a "self esteem promotion" thread where.. okay being scammed is always bad, but the lessons (hopefully) learnt off it are good - such as being more wary. Turning negatives into positives or at least adding trying to make the victim feel a less less crap about it all.

Another one.. you might want to tell people to not mention scamwarners to scammers. e.g. if they email the scammer and say "I know what you are, scamwarners told me" as a 'revenge'. Obviously you can't keep it completely hidden, but you can slow it's word spreading. I'm thinking along the lines of the aa419 "Gonez" thing.
On a similar line, something to say "don't get their email accounts shut down if you can avoid it". I'm thinking if a particular bad story comes along, baiters may want to mass attack the scammer, so it'd be useful to keep the scammers email open.

Tutorial on how to get email headers from various software (Windows Mail, Outlook Express) and free services (Y!, hotmail, gmail) posted somewhere as I imagine it'd be needed some time.

Perhaps you could get some statements from people who can do something, e.g. alan at aa419, or the police in various countries, or isps... statements to explain what they can do, how it works. Something to reassure the victim that someone does care and work is being done, even if it's on a small scale.

419eater has digg this, slashdot this and sommat else in their sidebar. You might want to consider doing the same because I think if there's a story horrific enough, it'd be good to share it on the bigger sites, plus free publicity.

The forum descriptions kinda fall off nearer to the bottom.
E.g. AFF says "has someone offered you a huge sum of money or..." whereas the lottery one just says "how lottery scams work". For clarity it should say something like "have you apparently won a lottery you didn't enter or have never heard of?"

@Emma Jones - well, ^^ saved you from 1 or 2 or more PMs
(and 'opportunities' of other info) :P :D

"Tutorial"s - "forum descriptions " :D I agree with johnny5

the sidebar things - :? Personally, don't care either way, and it might help publicity wise; although, I can also see where that might 'deter' some victims, as it might appear to novices as bringing them more embarrasement.

I'm not sure about the "statements from people who can"; although it really would be nice. But wonder if some of the ones known mainly by their email address might in some way end up compromised, if they did that. But it would be nice if could get some statements of suppoort, especially, if they were from offical types like Uk Metro police, or PhoneBusters, or other similar groups.

The email header guide is already here:
http://www.scamwarners.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7

I put it where I thought it would be needed, i.e. with the stuff where we'd usually ask someone to post the header. However, we can post it more than once if necessary. :)

As for the rest, I'll come back to them in the morning. I'm kinda pooped tonight. :)

I notice we don't have the "report this post to a moderator" feature.

It would be useful to have.

The only thing I might add, and one of the reasons I came here today, is you may want to add links for interesting television and pop-culture goings on in the Scam world, such as the recent NBC Dateline: To Catch a Con Man shows which aired on the USA NBC network not too long ago.

I watched this show in it's entirety last night on YouTube, and it was quite fascinating. Most sources seem to make it out that Credit Card fraud is linked to local criminals, when in fact, NBC Dateline revealed that nearly most of the crime is linked back to our lads in West Africa. A very fascinating story-line if anyone is interested in checking it out on YouTube. Just search "Chris Hansen" and the links/videos will come up.

I may clown around on-line, but Scams and Scam Baiting is something I take very seriously. One less victim is a job well done!

Thats a good idea MC, I'll put up a link for that.

I tried sending a Private Message to Emma and/or Julia, as per the suggestion on the page, but got a "NOT FOUND" message.

Anyway, I ran across an incredible program I wanted to share, so feel free to place this post where it will do the most good. The program is SpamCop and can be found at http://www.spamcop.net/sc - the beauty is that it's completely free!

First you register - again, it's free - then you copy the header of a SpamScam email, copy the email itself, paste them both in a box on the website and submit the information. SpamCop analyzes the information in ways most of us could never dream of doing, tracing the email from server to server, finding the agencies the email was sent through to get to you. It then compiles a report, which, when you agree to send it, notifies the abuse departments of each of the agencies the email has passed through, and we know that many of the SpamScammers bounce emails through several servers, to hide their identities.

In the two days I've been using it, my spam has dropped from a flood to a trickle, so I have to assume that many of those who had been emailing me, have had their services denied by their carriers.

Sure, they'll find others, but meanwhile, their activities have been slowed or halted, and that can't be a bad thing.

MM!
