Hi my name is Jen and though this forum and your sister forum I was able to find out that the guy that my mother met on a dating site 2 months ago is trying to scam her into sending him money . I was able to use a photo trace on the pics that he sent my mother from a link posted at "419eater" and found out that she is not one but one of many that this man has scammed in the past . Even though my mother is a "smart cookie" I think there for awhile she even fell for his lies a little . The warning flag went up about a month ago when he said that he was leaving the U.S for Africa (LAGOS) to work at a orphanage considering that he is ( ) an orphan himself . Of course yesterday he calls my mother out of the blue on her cell phone saying that he lost his wallet and needs money asap to make it through the rest of the month until he comes back to the U.S again . (this is when he tells my mother> "please don't tell your daughter I know you tell her everything but this is embarrassing and I don't want your daughter to think less of me as a person " Of course my mother is going to tell me . what he said , she is my best friend . Thank heaven my mother does not have internet connection at home and only at work and has not sent this man any money . I have instructed her to not answer her cellphone (he gave her three numbers to call and now the number he calls from comes up restricted ) if it comes up restricted and not to answer his texts or his emails when she is at work .Now I'm just wondering what do I do next to further protect her from this "person " ?

Does your mother realise he is a scammer? If not, it won't be easy to stop her contacting him, or other scammers she may find on dating sites.
Being able to recognise them for what they are, is the only real defence.

Back to case on point with my mother's situation ; I think she had her own sinking feeling about this man as well ,because when I told her last night what I had found on him she said "I knew it " and laughed and said "that should could not give him any money even if he begged and pleaded." She created a yahoo mail account just so she could talk to him and had given me permission to view his emails to her . She says she would not answer him through emails, texts or phone calls (he has called her 13 times today already ) but she is really angry that someone could toy with another person's emotions like he has . <which is understandable ) Right now I'm really undecided on either to answer the last two emails that he sent her impersonating my mother or leave it alone and let it wither away .

Just drop him. Don't impersonate your mother. Some scammers, not content with being low-life thieves, actually get angry at victims who refuse to pay, and even angrier if they have been "played" and they decide it's worth the effort to retaliate. While he isn't going to show up at her home any time soon (he is in Africa) he could cause her a few headaches by
reporting her as a scammer, reusing pics, trying to get her emails/profiles closed, etc. We have seen angry scammers do all of these things. Again, he can't do any real harm, but it isn't worth the headache.

Hi Jaddict,

With your mother's permission of course , could you please post the emails from the scammer here, there is no need for any of her emails to him or anything that is personal to her (the scammer using her name for instance).

Scammers recycle their emails to their victims making slight changes as required so the emails you mother recieved will be almost identical to the emails other women have / will receive, anybody doing a search on sections of those emails will be brought here where there is information and support to stop those people from being scammed.

It sounds like you have already looked through the information topics we have on love scams, if you can get your mother to read through those as well it may help her to avoid other scammers who may target her.

I will get right on to posting the emails from the scammer when I return from work today . Of course I will extract my mother's personal information from these "emails" .

I revealed in many details in a phone call to my mother what I had learned from this forum in the romance section and explained the m.o. of these scammers and have sent her the necessary tools on how to do a email header check and how to do a reverse picture look up to see if the picture has been used before in a scam .(very helpful tools for anyone that thinks they are being scammed by a romance scam artist )
I want to thank you all that contribute to this fine forum for if it was not for everyone and the links I found in the threads and on your sister site . I would of never found the information to protect my mother from this "scammer "

As per quested the emails . This scammer talked to my mother a lot through chat and I don't have records of those since I am accessing her email account through my laptop .
He is currently using the same name on Yahoo personals

The chats can get a little personal and may identify your mother so there is no need to post them.

Notice how the English is distinctly better in some of these emails than others. He makes multiple mistakes (and seriously overdoes the terms of endearment, especially "baby") in some of the more "everyday" types of emails, yet in the extremely romantic parts, the English improves dramatically. In general, the parts with better English will be copied, and the poor English will be his own writing.

So, I do a few quick searches, and I see your mom's scammer is a fan of lovingyou.com and poemslovers.com, probably the top 2 sites for romance scammer scripts.

Dotti , yes I did notice that about his emails and I want to thank you for further checking and finding out that he is a fan of the cut and paste club of the romantic poem sites . One certain important detail that my mother failed in noticing is that the scammer never really typed her name in any emails addressed to her and was using "baby"continually(my thoughts as in not being confused in who he is typing to as he most likely is scamming more then one woman at one time ) . I also did take your advice earlier in the post Dotti about just dropping him and did go about blocking all his email accounts at both of my mother's email addys and blocking him from both her yahoo and msn chat . He is still trying to call her and she did tell me that after I blocked him yesterday ( I had told my mother that I was blocking all his addys from her email accounts ) that he had noticed and texted her later on in the evening saying "oh baby please dont block me " I told her that by not answering any calls and texts that he will eventually quit trying to contact her and stop . (fingers crossed )
Also in the "romance scam " threads there is usually pictures that these scammer use into luring women into their traps . I have 5 pictures that he sent to my mother that are supposedly him . If you would like those as well please let me know .

The pictures would be great if you could post them, if you have trouble posting let us know and I can give you an email address to forward them to and I can do it for you.

I think I did this correctly as in the picture size and the "used by scammer " info on the photo . If I did not do it correctly please pm me and I will send them to be done correctly in the rules of the forum .

On a happy little side note . The scammer called my mother up while I was with her today . I answered her cell phone and asked who he wanted to talk to and he said my mother's name and I told him I was sorry but he had the wrong number as I just received the number he called as a new cell phone number that day . (hopefully this stops the calls and the texts )

Phone calls cost money and scammers are reluctant to spend it without a good chance of a reward, he will give up soon enough, whether or not he believed the phone really is yours now, he will certainly know that his game is up.
