Hello. Not sure if this is a scam.

Hey. Yesterday, I got five calls from this same number 857-232-0579. I was at work, so I wasn't able to answer any of them. On three of the calls, they stayed on the line until my answering machine came on. The messages were all the same, just various background noises associated with a call center(phones ringing, people talking) until my machine timed out. Today, I got another call from them, answered it, and it was a man that answered and said a short sentence for what I think was about placing bets, like "put me down for 20 dollars or percent on some sport", I couldn't really make it out, he talked rather fast; I said "what?" and he hung up. Is this some sort of scam? Has anybody heard of anything like this?

while its always wise to suspect a scam, a little more evidence would be good to have.
