Financial Sector Banned from Using 0845 Numbers for Customer Services

The FCA (Financial Conduct Authority) have announced their UK-wide ban on premium rate numbers and other non-standard numbers for financial services firms.

What are 0845 numbers? (From http://www.area-codes.org.uk )

0845 numbers are telephone numbers that are charged at higher rates due to the inclusion of a surcharge or ‘service charge’ to pay for the service being provided. Common uses for 0845 numbers include:

Chargeable information and support lines
Event ticket and travel booking services
Conference call services
Pre-sales information lines

Unlike traditional landline phone numbers, 0845 numbers are not associated with any specific geographic location.

0845 number call costs
Special two-part charging arrangements apply when calling 0845 numbers.
The first part of the call cost is your own phone company's standard per-minute ‘access charge’ which applies to all calls to numbers starting 084, 087, 09 or 118.
The second part is a variable ‘service charge’ which benefits the organisation you are calling. They are responsible for advising you of the rate that applies before you call.
Total call costs will typically be anywhere from 7p to 52p per minute, plus up to an additional 7p per-call charge.
In most circumstances, 0845 numbers will cost you more to call than a normal landline and will not be included in any free call allowances or bundled minutes that your tariff offers.
