Trade Association is an independent regulatory body whose principal role, is to return the funds and/or securities to investors, if the brokerage holding the assets becomes insolvent. The Trade Association was established in 2002 as a non-profit, governance body, funded by member broker-dealers. Essentially Trade Association's coverage revolves around two distinct situations:

Insolvent or Bankrupt Firms
In the securities industry, it is perfectly normal for two separate broker-dealers to work together, in order to service a client's account. These firms are known as an introductory firm and the clearing firm. The introducing firm generally employs the individual broker whose job it is, to take the client's order and executes the trade. The clearing firm is responsible for holding the client's funds and securities and sending out the account statement, which will include all of the clients' assets, which are held "on deposit". If the clearing firm was to become insolvent or is unable to return the client's assets, it is the Trade Associations responsibility, not the introductory firms, to ensure the client's assets are returned.

Mission
If a brokerage firm is forced to cease operations due to bankruptcy, financial difficulties or they have been found to be carrying out fraudulent activity – the Trade Association will provide assistance to recover the lost funds, within certain parameters, and then attempt to return the clients assets. Without the Trade Association, investors dealing with financially troubled or fraudulent brokerage firms are at risk of losing their securities or funds forever or conversely wait for years while their assets are tied up in court.
