Fake banks, couriers, law firms, escrow and other fake sites used in scams.

:laugh-s: Careful everybody, this is a phishing email, and of no way coming from the real Yahoo! customer care service, which will indeed reply you that this email is not coming from their service and that is a phishing email, but real Yahoo! services will reply after weeks as they are at the moment overflooded by requests from their customers asking if they really need to give them their password, , never discard your password to anybody, and even and especially not to your bank, email provider, and so on, your password is never required by them!

Although we don't generally cover phishing here (the best way to deal with phishing sites is to report them to the real site so they can get them closed down), this one is a special case, as this particular phishing attempt is directly tied to the kinds of scammers we deal with here.

Unlike more organized phishing attempts that use professional-looking fake sites, this is a simple, poorly-written email attempt. This was sent by a scammer in Benin.

The scammer's goal is to gain access to the victim's email account. If access is gained, the scammer will do one of two things: 1) use the stolen email account to mass-mail scams to thousands of unsuspecting people or 2) take over the account and send emails to everyone in the victim's address book. The email will generally claim that the victim is stranded or in trouble in a foreign country, and will ask all of the recipients to send money via western union or moneygram.

If you receive an email of the "I'm stranded" kind from a friend or a relative, take the time to research it before sending any money to anyone. Chances are your friend or relative is fine, but completely unaware of what is gong on. If you are the person whose account has been comproised, be sure to notify your contacts of the potential issue so they are not aken in.
