Information on romance scams and scammers.

I matched with a girl on tinder. She asked for my skype ID and whatsapp number. We did video chat on skype and she asked if I wanted to have fun. My naivety gave away and she recorded my video and later blackmailed me. She sent me a screenshot of a msg she is about to send my sister on her facebook inbox. I flagged the youtube vid and it got removed immediately. I got a msg from him / her to go to a nearest western union and pay 800 Dollars. I was about to pay but the western union was fortunately closed. I am supposed to pay her today morning.

Anyway this has given me time to think this through and I have done the following till now:

1. I blocked the user on skype.
2. I changed my skype and facebook passwords.
3. I deactivated my facebook.
4. I put my name on google alerts.
5. I have officially reported the user's skype ID to Skype support. They asked me to send them screenshots of the conversation where she/he is blackmailing and also the screenshots of both mine and the abuser's ID / Profile. I sent them right away and they have already restricted the abuser's profile.

Do I need to do more?
In how many cases do they actually send the vid to relatives/friends?

I have already gone through alot of embarrassment recently because of a con artist who turned out to be a hooker and reported me to the police for harassment when I refused to pay money. I had to pay alot in legal fee to get out of that situation.

You know you're all thinking how stupid I am to get into a slightly similar mess twice but I really need some feedback. Thank you!

Thank you for your reply Byron. In how many cases do they actually end up sending pictures?

I read on forums that they dont waste time with potential victims that ignore and don't give in but then I also thought that maybe they would want to still send pictures just so that the sob story gets posted online and scares future victims into paying. Anyway Im freaking out right now!

This is not a new scam, blackmail scams happens often. Social media has brought scammers into this.

I personally have not seen a case where they posted a picture or video.

You will find that majority of all sites will not allow explicit photo's to be posted. I'm glad you reported the Youtube vid. It most likely was going to be removed anyway, but you did the right thing.

Once a scammer knows he can not steal from a victim he moves on. He will not waste his stolen money on internet time with a victim who will not pay.

If you pay this scammer you will keep on paying until you are broke or quit paying.

Thank you so much Byron. Your post means alot to me.

One more thing. Should I simply block them from whatsapp instead of changing my whatsapp number? Im into sales and I cant afford to completely change the whatsapp number because of my clients.

Thanks again!

Your scammer which is 99.999999% a male is from the Philippians. He will blackmail you into him having kings life style.

Do not give him the leverage to control your life. He knows if he send anything to your sister he has lost all leverage.

Ignore/block him.

Thank you again Byron! :) One more question. Eventhough my facebook profile is extremely private (my friends list is not visible to others, none of my photos, posts or anything else is not visible to public at all), should I still keep my facebook deactivated?

I deactivated it so that the abuser wouldnt be able to hack into my profile and somehow get access to the list of my friends etc.
BUT then I also thought maybe I should keep it activated to see if there is any suspicious activity like strangers trying to post something to my friends pages that I can immediately catch and report.

Please advise me what to do. Like I told you I was in a similar embarrassing blackmailing situation before (not online but in the real world) so I dont want to face embarrassment again.

Scammers use fake names and etc. They will never show themselves or they will get arrested. It is nothing like real life.

I do not do social media. I would think having it private and not to accept friends request from people you have not met face to face should be sufficient.

I blocked two of his numbers and he still sent me another whatsapp msg with another number.

This time the number is +62 889-7383-6743. This is very scary. Do they usually threaten multiple times? I did reply to him last night showing Im scared. Maybe thats why he is being persistent with his threats?

Scammers are programmed that if they get any reply there is chance to steal your money.

You have to stop all contact and as advised close that number.
