There are few various types of these scam. I will explain a few.

Many Social Media Sites such as Skype, Kik, Facebook, Pof and Chatroulette are a home for Scammers and Thieves to use to scam by using threats of fear and/or criminal charges.

This scam involves 'grooming' a potential victim into sending compromising photographs/video to the scammer - In some scams the scammer/thief will, initially, send compromising pictures which he/she will say are of him/her -- these will be stolen from elsewhere

Types of blackmail/sextortion scams:

Threatening to send your images to your Facebook friends and family.

Scammer will meet you on a social media site and ask to exchange compromising images. He may have asked prior or will ask later to be added to your Facebook account.

Now the scam begins. He will tell you to send money via Moneygram, Western Union, Amazon gift card, Prepaid scratch off card or any other untraceable method to him.

He will tell you if you do not comply he will send the photo’s to your Facebook friends list.

Another version of this scam is Under Age girls/boys.

The scammer will meet you again on a social media site. He/she will tell you they are over the age of 18. As you progress communicating with this person/scammer he will ask to exchange indecent photographs/video.

After you exchange photo’s you will be contacted by the scammers fake "Father" or "Mother". They will tell you that you sent pictures to an under age girl/boy. They will want you to send money for therapy or for them not to go to the police. In some cases the scammer has contacted victim pretending to be Law Enforcement.

There are also seen cases where a scammer pretends to an online agent looking for pedophiles. This scam is using the same payment methods mentioned above. The Scammer will tell you that if you pay them they will not report it.

Recommended Actions:

It is best to stop all contact with the scammers. Ignore his calls and messages.

Ignore all demands for money If you pay the scammer he will continue to blackmail you. You will only stop paying when you go broke or realize you are being scammed.

Deactivate your Facebook account for two weeks. Change your photo or avatar when you reactivate it or get a new one. Also change your user name. Do not accept request from anyone you have never met.

Do the above for all social media and Skype.

You may have to change your phone numbers.

File a report with your local law enforcement agency and to one of the following below if possible.

I sent intimate photos/video to my scammer or he says he recorded my activities on webcam, and now he is threatening to publish them. What can I do?
Unfortunately, there is not much you can do. The only advice we can give you is not to give in to blackmail demands, and once again, cut off ALL contact with the scammer. If he cannot reach you, he cannot blackmail you. If he knows that he has power over you, he will continue to abuse that power and demand more and more money. He may promise to destroy the photos/video, but remember he is a liar and a thief, and his promises are worth nothing.

The truth is, in most cases the scammer will not follow through with this threats, because following through will cost him time and money. If he tries to post anything pornographic, most public sites would delete it anyway. In the unlikely event that he does post something, you need to be proactive and contact the site immediately to have it removed. Depending on the threats, you may want to file a report with law enforcement.

Just remember for the future that any photo or video you give to ANYONE is out of your control, and anything you do on webcam can be recorded. This particular issue is not exclusive to scammers - the internet is full of stories of angry people who posted intimate details or photos/video of ex-partners after a relationship ended badly.

If you sent or received nudes knowing that you were communicating with a minor the above does not apply to you.

In this situation, we are not willing/nor will assist you.

The first post in this thread Merged (BW) tells you all you need to know. Just follow the instructions there.

Please do not tell scammers that they are listed here - it will take them seconds to change their fake details and their new details will not be listed for any future victims to find.

I'm pretty sure that I've recently been scammed. Same thing pretty much happened to me. Meet a girl on POF said her age was 18 and exchanged number. Last night she asked if we could exchange sexual pictures and like an idiot I did. Well after that didn't her from her until I received a phone call from her "Father" saying him and his wife are going to press charges or pay $350 to terminate the cell phone number and pay for therapy or something like that. Said to pay money thru moneygram to a Rushcard account. This gentleman called me several times asking if I ever made it to the a CVS to transfer money. Pretty sure this is a scam but I'm nervous that it's not for obvious reasons. The girls name was Marissa and the phone number is (302) 470-0282 which is a Delaware number. Someone please help.

As you've figured out, it is a scam. There's no minor girl, so there's nothing you can be arrested for. The first post of this topic explains everything - stop all communication with the scammer and do not send money.

Okay, I think it happened to me but I'm not positive. I'm really shaken up over the whole thing. So please give me some advice please, I'm so worried. So on 3/6 there was a girl I matched with named Amanda. It said she was local and 18. It seemed we had a lot of similar interests and she was pretty from the one picture she had up. Anyways, we didn't talk for to long before she said she's not on pof often and asked for my number. I gave it to her and she texted me right away, even sent me another picture, just one with her and a baby calf, and we chatted for a few mins, she asked for a pic so I sent her one I thought I looked good in, not dirty I was in a suit. I thought we were getting along and she seemed real for now.
She then sends me a few pictures of her in bra and panties, I just said I wasn't expecting that and she's beautiful. I never asked for any pics or anything at all ever. Not once.
She then sends me a few of her naked and playing with herself. I said wow that's hot. She asked to see how hot its making me. I said I don't send those and asked if she was 18. She didn't answer that and just asked if I wanted to watch a video of her after I send a pic. I ask again if she is 18. She just asks again for pic.
I stopped texting that night but I made the mistake I guess of texting hey once the next day, I guess hoping she was real. I'm just looking for a gf.
Nothing back from her
Flash forward, 3/11. I get a call from a yelling man with a southern accent same number she was texting me with, south Carolina on my ID I think Tim or tom was his name. He says Amanda is his daughter and he walked in on her making a video on a laptop. Apparently she smashed the laptop when he came into the room and now he just needs to replace that laptop without his wife knowing and that he called Verizon, so I'm assuming that's their carrier. He says he has all the messages between us and his buddy is a cop and since she is under age, he didn't say an age, but under age. But he said that he'd sent it to court if I don't pay half of the laptop which was 1200 so I'd need to pay 600. He said he had to replace it by the next morning and that he would sell stuff out of his shed to lay for it. I said I don't have much money but he said he'd give me 30 days to pay 50 bucks. He says his cop buddy has looked up my record, and it sounded like they had. He said "wife" then hung up on me. He called back a minute later saying his wife had come in the room and he doesn't want her knowing. Then he said he would call the next day 3/12 when the laptop was fixed. I never heard from him until 2 hours (10:45pm 3/18) ago he called me from a different number and left a message saying he tried to get ahold of me and to call him. I haven't heard from him since I spoke to him on the 11th. He then then texted me right away after the voicemail telling me that this was "Mr.Miller" and I needed to call him right away. This was again on the new #.

I never once sent a dirty pic nor did I ever ask for the few I received. That said, I am very scared, I'm not sure if I should call him tomorrow or not.

The original number that "Amanda" texted me on and he called me the 1st time on the 11th is 843-709-8736
The number that just called me and texted me a few hours ago is 843-709-6598
Both are SC numbers.
I live nowhere near SC.
Please help.

Same thing just happened to me.

A fake female added me on Kik and coaxed me into full body nude photos. I didn't see any harm in it, and they offered to send videos to my email account.

Immediately following this...they sent me pictures of my friends and family and threatened to send my nude photos out through Facebook if I didn't sign up with credit card information through a porn site.

In all my years of social messaging and chatting...I've never had anyone make such a horrifying threat.

I deactivated my Facebook account while stalling the scammer and pretending to make payments. I then told them I had notified the police and will turn over any evidence needed to sort this out.

My biggest fear is that they may actually be able to send these photos to my friends and family...since they already scoured my friends list before I had the chance to deactivate the account.

Can anyone else who has had this extortion scam happen to them confirm if the user actually went through with the threat and sent photos out?!

I've since blocked the user in question on Kik and reported them for spam with a full chat log...but I'm still fearful of my photos being sent to my family members! This whole thing is a nightmare! :(
