Then one day, I asked him if it wasnt possible for us to speak on the phone. He said that I needed to go through some kind of security to register my phone as soldiers weren't allowed to speak with anyone not cleared. He said I could apply by contacting this email. He would always have to go ask' Halverson' (his army friend) for this info. but I guess he had it to hand really. All part of the plot to make me beleive in him. Here is the phone enquiry email:

[b
To. [email protected]

Dear Sir

Please may I speak with Sergent John Donald.

My cellphone is registered in England- Number (0044) **** *** ***

Kind Regards

**** **************][/b]

Then a couple of days later I recieved this reply:

Madam we have various types of phone available to make calls to our soldier boys all you have to do is request for one and make payment as scheduled . Get back to us asap.

Thank you

So then I said to 'John' that I had no idea what they were talking about, and would I just have to pay for the phone call? (which I didnt mind doing). He said he didnt know. He said that perhaps I should write back to them and ask them what they mean. So I did. And got this reply:

Dear Subscriber. ,

Thank you vey much for your interest in our satellite phone services. In our offer we have got four satellite phones : Iridium 9505A, Iridium 9555, Thuraya SO-2510 and Thuraya SG-2520.

Iridium does not produce any color-screen models - they are concerned about reliablility and ruggedness of their handset more than on "eye-candy". Both Thuraya handsets on the other hand have color screens and other features similiar to those of modern cellphones.

Iridium 9505A is satellite phone works anywhere on Earth and provides reliable and high quality voice and data satellite service. Featuring handheld phones weighing less than one pound, global coverage is provided by 66 low-earth-orbiting satellites, which allows users to make and receive calls virtually anywhere in the world and send/receive text messages, all you need is a clear line of site to the sky. Cost of that phone is 1250USD + shipping.

Iridium 9555 is the latest evolution in well known, rugged and reliable Iridium satellite phones – and it works everywhere. Without exception. It is small but determined, sleek but industrial grade, easy to use but powerful. It is every bit as rugged as Iridium’s previous handsets - still resistant to water, dust and shock - but streamlined and packed with innovative new features. The Iridium 9555 is not only the smallest phone Iridium has ever made, it’s also the most powerful. With a significantly reduced footprint from the previous model, more hand-friendly form factor, and aerodynamic features such as an internally stowed antenna, this sleek handset is designed to easily go wherever you do. Cost of 9555 handset is $1690 USD + shipping.

Thuraya SO-2510 was released in November 2006. It has a colour screen and is claimed to be the smallest and lightest satellite phone in the world and uses the VxWorks operating system.
Price : 1050 USD + shipping

Thuraya SG-2520 is a dual-mode handset that also connects to GSM/GPRS services and is based on Windows CE. The device is slightly bigger than the SO-2510 but it also has a camera, GPS and support for SD Cards. The operating system is a rather customised version of Windows CE and is not at all like Windows Mobile. It has support for running Java J2ME applications only.Thuraya SIM cards will work in regular GSM phones and ordinary GSM SIM cards can be used on the satellite network as long as the GSM provider has a roaming agreement with Thuraya.
Price : 1400 USD + shipping.

Basic advantages of the Thuraya satellite telephony are, first of all:
* possibility of communicating freely in 110 countries in Europe, North and Central Africa, Asia, and Middle East
* possibility of accessing the Internet anywhere within a satellite network coverage, including the following seas: Red, Mediterranean, Arabian, North, Baltic, Dead, Caspian, and Black, as well as a part of the Indian Ocean

Obviously, I told him that I was now way going to pay that much money to speak to him and how disgusted I was at how the US government treaded their soldiers and their families. And all 'John' would say is that he couldnt beleive it and he understood I couldnt afford it and never mind we would have to wait till we met................I still didnt suspect a scam, even then.........................

Sorry, this is a bit long winded. But I'm trying to get over the fact that this has been going on for ages and want everyone to know all the relevant bits of info that they might recieve.

The last bit is to follow:
by nearlymuggedoff Fri Jan 07, 2011 1:20 pm
In the middle of all this he did mention that he was having problems releasing some money for his daughters boarding school fees. He said that the army dont allow them to carry and cards or cash or have any access to money. He said that he had to contact his lawyer but his lawyer was on holiday. He said that he was very worried.

I again told him how disgusted I was with the US government and now the school dean for putting him under pressure at a time like this..............

arghhhhh!!!

With hindsight, I think he was just priming me for the fact he couldnt get hold of any money. After a couple of days he said he'd sorted it. I guess he was waiting for me to offer to pay it too??? Maybe??? I dont know..............
by nearlymuggedoff Fri Jan 07, 2011 1:29 pm
so, after a few more chats I applied for his leave.

This was the email he gave me:

[email protected]

Even then, I thought why on earth have the US leave department got a gmail account.....lol....but still, I applied...........

after a few days I got this message:

To whom it may concern. Madam we would like to know how serious youare towards having your soldier boy home. And are you sure you areready to go through all the leave process of your soldier boy? Getback to us ASAP.Col Robert Gonzalez

The senders name was from a John Benedict

I emailed back and said I was VERY serious!!!! (arghhhhh....lol)

Then they asked me for my personal info, which I gave them:

[bTo whom it may concern. Madam you are hereby advised provide answersto the following questions in this other. Name, Age, Sex, Date ofbirth, Mother's maiden name, relationship with deployed officer andFull home address plus your cell phone number. Get back to us asapwith these information and we will start with the leave process. ][/b]

In the interim, I speaking with 'John' and getting excited that its going ahead and blah, blah........then a few days later I got this:

Image
by nearlymuggedoff Fri Jan 07, 2011 1:34 pm
When I saw that was when I figured that NOBODY would ask for money if giving a soldier leave. And the wording in that document was just NOT ENGLISH!!!

I was online to 'Sergeant John Donald' at the time and I told him it was a scam.

I told him that he ought to be ashamed of himself, that I wish him nothing but sadness in his life.........

And his parting words, before I deleted his IM profile, were:

"I know you sit down in one corner of the world playing with peoples emotion, I think posterity will judge you......whenever I get out of this desert I will seek for you anywhere in the world........I will contact interpol."

So right to the end he was still playing mind games with me...............

You aren't foolish even if you had fallen for the scam, which would be like criticising you for getting bitten by a bug, and comparing them with insects is intentional.

College professors, financial advisors and solicitors have all been snared by scammers and the mayor of one UK town had to be rescued from Nigeria not so many years ago. Once scammers get a sniff of money they're like hyenas and will call you day and night and take over your life. They will intentionally put you through mental torture and this has led to tragedy many times.

The way you feel you should explain about not paying is something to put out of your head. You never ever pay money or send anything to an online-only friend if they ask for it. If someone cares for you they'd rather starve than ask because they'd put the relationship before their own personal needs.

Non-EU citizens should go here to find out about obtaining a visa to work as an au pair in the UK

Whenever payment is requested by Western Union you're dealing with a scammer

Hey Gomer

Thanks for making me feel better :D

I've just been reading more posts on the matter and the whole scam is unfolding. I've also just recieved a call on my mobile which was from a foreign number. Dear oh dear! :( From the International code directory I think the caller is from Nepal!!??

To help me verify if the call is related to the fake soldier could someone check out the originating country of these headers please? Thank you !!

Ah ok. NO, no surprise eh :( - No luck on the other two??

I wonder why I'm getting a call from Nepal then. Can you guys figure that one?? Can the scammers disguise their number or anything? :yikes:

Thanks for your help and advice. I guess if I get any more calls ( I didnt pick up the call as didnt recognise the number) then I'll have to change my mobile??

What do you think?

Regards (I keep going to sign my name!!! lol)

Oh my goodness!!! I have been exchanging emails and chats with Moses Johnson for about a month now. He has been proclaiming his love for me, etc...I knew something wasn't quite right and then I came upon this. I warned him that I was a pretty smart lady. Thankfully, he has no info on me.
by Flibble Tue Feb 07, 2012 11:18 pm
Thank you for your account of what happened nearlymuggedoff (your username gave me a good laugh too ). I've only recently found out scams like this existed and your insight was very interesting. It's so shameful people try to take advantage of women seeking companionship like this. About your mobile phone number: just simply ignore any calls you suspect may be from this person. He will only spend time and money to contact you if he still thinks he can scam you. Ignoring his calls is the best way to get him to leave you alone. Totally cut off all contact.

Hello daphnebxl! Thank you for posting information about this scammer. I do hope you found this site before sending that man any money.

Also hello to lahunter. Good thing you researched this man and discovered he's a lying scumbag.

by lahunter Wed Feb 08, 2012 12:28 pm
I am curious though...and slightly confused. Is the man in the pictures the scammer? Or has the scammer stolen this guys identity. In his pics wearing his uniform it clearly says his name is Dauser. I also don't know what they stand to gain from doing this.
by AlanJones Wed Feb 08, 2012 12:54 pm
Hi lahunter.

The person in the picture is a real US soldier and is in no way connected with the scam. He has placed his photos on a Social Networking site such as Facebook and the scammers have stolen his photos to use in their scam.

As to what they stand to gain, purely and simply the victim's money. They will spin the victim a story about needing money to pay for leave or communication equipment or having a trunkbox containing $millions sent to the victim.

Please do not tell scammers that they are listed here - it will take them seconds to change their fake details and their new details will not be listed for any future victims to find.
