Information on romance scams and scammers.

As Justin said, I didn't research the institution because it is irrelevant. Whether or not the information he gave you is legitimate would not in any way affect the intent or the course of the scam. I specifically mentioned that I had not researched it because I did not want to suggest that the information he gave you was confirmed to be accurate. Mike has confirmed that information to be inaccurate--but as I said, the scam was already clear without that research.

I asked you why you thought the institution was legitimate on the slight chance that he gave you a website link to visit. Scammers sometimes link to real websites, but other times they create fake websites to make their scams appear to be more legitimate, and we do research those fake websites and work to get them killed.

There is absolutely no doubt that this is a scammer. This particular scam is nothing more than a variant of the same scam we have seen hundreds, if not thousands of times before. Based on your responses, it appeared that you were holding some lingering hopes that this person is not a scammer. This is very common in romance scams, and is one of the reasons we advise immediately cutting contact.

If you post some of the emails you received from this scammer, we can probably point out many of the other elements, including certain items in the scammer's English (if he actually wrote anything himself) that also show us this is an African scammer.

Hi
Like so many women here am beginning to ask whether I have been scammed. A scottish guy apparently on loan to US is in Kabul, declaring his undying love for me. Initially asked for me to pay £4300 to pay for admin and transport fees to secure his leave. Then afterwards got another email stating that because we arent married they need a further £20750 which is 3% of his wages. I was told this was needed to protect him as he is a British Officer (Captain) and make sure our relationship is genuine. All emails are coming from militaryleaverequest@adnmail
Is this is scam? Its very elaborate. I did transfer the 1st payment, but to a UK bank account in a womans name, so hoping there will be some kind of comeback that way.
I read all about these scams and now are really worried.
Someone please help?

Hello mayfower2012 and welcome to ScamWarners,

Yes I am afraid that what you describe is definitely a scam. Soldiers do not pay for leave, they earn it. Also when leave is required it is the soldier who requests it, not some randome person off the internet who he has met. Additionally, the army do not write to people using free email addresses, they would use an address ending .mil.

I would recommend that you get in touch with your local police and take all the emails to them and see if they will give you a crime reference number (or whatever they give in your country) and then speak to your bank and see if there is anyway that the transfer can be reversed. It is likely that the account that you transferred the money to belongs to another scam victim, who believes that she is receiving payments as part of a job or similar.

Could you also post up all the email address that the scammer uses, together with the early emails (including headers) as these will help others avoid being scammed by this scammer.

Please do not tell scammers that they are listed here - it will take them seconds to change their fake details and their new details will not be listed for any future victims to find.

Thank you so much Alan,
I had a feeling, he was never to keen to give me any real evidence or talk about himself. I will send you all correspondence to your email address and please feel free to publish it to make sure him and his friend take no more money from anyone else.
To everyone else out there: His name is Captain Raytom Johnson, and is using Lt Jimmy Alexander as his boss for all communications etc. Supposidly in Kabul, Afghanistan. Claiming be be 49 years old, he is using dating sites and a lot of charm to scam people. Pictures will be posted later.

Thanks loads
