Welcome Sandie,

I'm sorry to hear you too were a victim of these scammers, but I am glad that you realized before sending money for leave. As you can see, you are not alone. The US soldier/ fake leave scam format is very popular these days, mainly because it has been successful for these scammers.

These scammers often use scripts for their early emails, and they will continue to use the same scripts after they change names and email addresses. Could you post some of your scammer's early emails (remove your info), so that we can help to prevent others being scammed?

I have had exactly the same thing from 2 soldiers. One supposedly stationed in Afghanistan and one in Germany. I just knew it was a scam the minute they said I had to request leave for them and I just knew there was going to be a request for money shortly afterwards. I knew they were full of it as well because of the way they were typing, you can tell that English is not their first language and the fact that they said they love me from the 2nd conversation we had and that they can't wait to be with me. What a load of rubbish, no normal bloke says that to you after 2 conversations. You might get an 'I like you' and that's it. It has been fun stringing them along though. The address I was given to write to was [email protected]. As I said I just knew it was all a scam, as if a real army email address would be at 'gmail'. Please, please, please, anyone reading this you have to be so careful and for goodness sake don't send a penny anywhere. Don't get into anything with anyone who says they are an American soldier stationed abroad.

Sorry to hear about your bout with the Army scam.
Its too bad that they have to use the US ARMY men that are out fighting for their country for the scam.
it just makes me sick to my stomach that someone can go to those lengths when there are proud men and women out there fighting to make our world safe......and there are scummy people doing that to them, making the ARMY look bad.

I hope they get caught and do time for the sad thing they are doing, and I hope that they have not scammed any lonely people.

Just becareful out there because the Army doesn't make any family or loved ones ask for a request for leave! and you are right they certainly don't use gmail, or hotmail or yahoo.

Have a Safe and Happy Holiday!

Hi
I wish I had of found this site earlier, as I believe I have now been scammed. I have been in contact with a Sgt from US army in Afghanistan and he asked for payment for his flight to visit me, telling me that because I lived outside the US that the army personel has to pay for their own flight and that army personel have limited access to their accounts, and by filling out the leave request form with my details the admin office will refund me the money as soon as the Sgt notification of his safe arrival. I did find a US military site that did support the information about them having to arrange payment for their flights outside of the US, so I paid for the flight and admin costs. But then I was contacted to pay for stamp duty and transit fees, which I thought were outrageous. Which I am putting off paying. I got suspious and decided to research again, looking up the colonel's name and found he is retired now and linked to this site. They must be updating their information as he asked me to email directly to the colonel, the address being [email protected] and then later it changed to [email protected] when requesting for the stamp duty. The stamp duty request did come from a Lt Gen. Stultz C. Jack saying to arrange payment with Lt. Col. Robert Gonzalez. probably to the Westernunion office again. I have been asking questions about the things in his photos and his answers seem genuine. I guess I don't need to ask that I have been scammed. I was contacted by another army guy but he was using ghe email address that has been mentioned in the other posts. so I deleted him straight away, but he didn't ask for leave, just money for phone connection. I did ask this sgt about phone conversation and he did say it has to be requested and he would do that, and didn't mention about money!!! It would be nice if this guy was genuine, but I guess the email address gives him away. I thought I would tell you about it just incase they are getting clever with their email addresses. Thanks for listening

Welcome! I'm sorry you had such an ugly experience. An expert member will be with you shortly. In the meantime some thoughts:
The US Army takes care of their soldiers. They are given the opportunity to call their families and friends for free. Any leave has to be asked for by the soldiers and is awarded directly to them. Once the soldiers are ready to depart, the Army provides the transport back home for free, too.
Could you please tell us what website you were looking at?
I did find a US military site that did support the information about them having to arrange payment for their flights outside of the US, so I paid for the flight and admin costs.

Best wishes

Hi Katherine,
I found it on nv.ngb.army.mil there is a document on this site. nv.ngb.army.mil./hro/agr/ArmyLeave.pdf and in chapter 8 it outlines the procedure for the overseas leave request. The things the Sgt as mentioned to me I have found in this document. I suppose if I found it, the scammers can too. How can if find out if this guy is for real, as he did give me his service number for when I requested the leave as his contact for staying in Australia. He also mentioned that he did fill in a request form first and what I had to fill in was for contact details for his stay in Australia and once I had paid for the stamp duty there would be more forms to fill in, and he would have to get a medical in Germany before coming. I guess they are getting better if this is a scam.

There is no mechanism or requirement for service personnel going on leave that requires any third party civillian or otherwise to pay any kind of fee for anything. It is a scam, pure and simple; Any details of a serviceman that he has given to you may be a genuine person, or may be totally made up.

Walk away.

Thank you, I will. Its a shame how they use these service men and their photos. Do these guys ever find out they are being exploited.
