Information on romance scams and scammers.

I think I am being scammed. It is not the same alias, but is very similar in structure.

This is my email I received and it was given to me by someone going by the name of Lt. Elaine Charlie. She claims to be a widow currently serving in Iraq and is due to retire in 2 months. She contacted me through Match.com.

Dear Subscriber. ,

Thank you very much for your interest in our satellite phone services. In
our offer we have got four satellite phones : Iridium 9505A, Iridium 9555,
Thuraya SO-2510 and Thuraya SG-2520.

Iridium does not produce any color-screen models - they are concerned
about reliability and ruggedness of their handset more than on
"eye-candy".
Both Thuraya handsets on the other hand have color screens and other
features similar to those of modern cellphones.

Iridium 9505A is satellite phone works anywhere on Earth and provides
reliable and high quality voice and data satellite service. Featuring hand
held phones weighing less than one pound, global coverage is provided by
66
low-earth-orbiting satellites, which allows users to make and receive
calls
virtually anywhere in the world and send/receive text messages, all you
need is a clear line of site to the sky. Cost of that phone is 700USD +
shipping.

Iridium 9555 is the latest evolution in well known, rugged and reliable
Iridium satellite phones – and it works everywhere. Without exception. It
is small but determined, sleek but industrial grade, easy to use but
powerful. It is every bit as rugged as Iridium’s previous handsets -
still
resistant to water, dust and shock - but streamlined and packed with
innovative new features. The Iridium 9555 is not only the smallest phone
Iridium has ever made, it’s also the most powerful. With a significantly
reduced footprint from the previous model, more hand-friendly form factor,
and aerodynamic features such as an internally stowed antenna, this sleek
handset is designed to easily go wherever you do. Cost of 9555 handset is
620 USD + shipping.

Thuraya SO-2510 was released in November 2006. It has a color screen and
is claimed to be the smallest and lightest satellite phone in the world
and
uses the VxWorks operating system.
Price : 510 USD + shipping

Thuraya SG-2520 is a dual-mode handset that also connects to GSM/GPRS
services and is based on Windows CE. The device is slightly bigger than
the
SO-2510 but it also has a camera, GPS and support for SD Cards. The
operating system is a rather customized version of Windows CE and is not
at
all like Windows Mobile. It has support for running Java J2ME applications
only.Thuraya SIM cards will work in regular GSM phones and ordinary GSM
SIM
cards can be used on the satellite network as long as the GSM provider has
a roaming agreement with Thuraya.
Price :400 USD + shipping.

You are correct in your concern that this is a scam. I am glad that you have not sent money. I am separating this into its own topic in hopes we can get a better profile on this scammer.

The person who has been emailing you is an African man, not an American woman. The "satellite phone" scam is a standard African scammer format. You can find more info about this standard scam format here:
http://www.scamwarners.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=6527

Could you please post the emails and any email addresses and/or websites used by this scammer (removing your own personal information first). These scammers generally have email scripts, which they use on several victims, sometimes changing names and small details--but other times using as-is with no changes. Posting the script may help other victims to avoid or stop being scammed.

Welcome Russ,

I hope you have not lost money to this scammer.

Could you please post some of "her" initial emails to you, as well as the photos "she" is using? The scammer doesn't even know the person in the photos--he/she just copied them from online somewhere--but it is good to alert others that the photos are currently being used in scams.
