Fast found love eccentric Cetra wants to meet trying to get leave, but not his time wants me to send $2000 as a bonus for someone to replace him so we can visit. Said he put in for a month leave which was granted but needs the money for me to go ahead and get him to travel. Sounds like a scam and red flags flaring up? Who asks for money before you meet?

It's obvious from his writing that the scammer is West African. What is the email address of the pretend leave officer? Does he have a website?

No real soldier needs anyone else to ask for his leave or to pay for it. Leave is like vacation from a job; it is earned after one has worked for some time.

Thank you for your tips and insight ... Wants me to send money to diplomat and won't give military ID. Can a yahoo account be found? Warn all ladies - !!! Beware of online dating scammers - meet in person and stay away from long distance military fakes

Thank you both for replies - it confirms my apprehension and concerns for avoiding direct questions. How do I help stop this and make people more aware?

Don't want anyone to go through this.,

Hi and welcome, Cscott. The truth is it can not be stopped. The best we can do is to educate, and post about the frauds so that others may be warned if they are searching.

Please read this article in the romance scams section : viewtopic.php?f=13&t=6527 (probably all of the articles at the top of the romance scams section are worth a read for you).

From what I understand you were smart enough to avoid the fraud, so no crime has been committed. However, the sooner a paper trail gets started on this scammer, the more likely that future victims can be avoided. Law enforcement can trace Yahoo email addresses.

In the article referenced above are links to the IC3, FTC, and CID ( if it was an Army impersonation). you can file reports with them to get paper trails started on this criminal.

by the way, was it the same email address for the bogus $2000 leave as it was for the fake leave officer? I did not seem to see the address nor email(s) from the leave officer.

Thank you for the article links. They have used yahoo address and IM.

Process seemed to
- get to know
- become interested
- profess never met anyone like you
- serving country with honor
- request leave
- retire and plan a future after meeting
- falling in love
- waiting on admin leave approval
- need money
- saying no brings guilt messages
- refusal starts the love buttons again
- to pushy needs

Scammer!!! How dare they insult our men in uniform.

I'm going through something similar. I started talking to this guy through the dating site OkCupid. He is claiming he is on some surveillance mission to take down drug lords and terrorists in Nigeria. We chat thru WhatsApp and his phone number is from Nigeria (which I found odd if he was only stationed there for 5 months). Then after just a few days, confessed his love and that he really needed to get out of there and be home with me and his son (who apparently was left with his only family, an uncle, that he doesn't get along with) but the only way he can get out is doing what his commander asks of him and that is to get my bank info so they can wire transfer funds to my account, then have me Western Union or MoneyGram the money to a receiving officer there. My gut tells me this is a scam, I guess I am looking for reassurance that I'm right and what to do next. What trips me up is the initial wire transfer where most scams I have read about were processing fake money orders or checks first, then sending that money. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's a scam. Please post the emails, including those from the commanding officer, with headers, so that other victims can recognize the scam.

There were never any emails, just IM/texts thru WhatsApp. Only info I can give is the situation. Wish I had more. Anything I can do?

The hardest part is honestly facing those gut instincts .. But trust them. I believe in our military and appreciate what they do, unfortunately the scammers pray on this and the next thing 3 months go by and it's all good .. But something changes, grammar, avoiding direct answers, to missing calls, emails to finally the money request comes. A true gentleman never asks that, and once called out ... You will see a tone change. Best line... I only want to be with a man who had his own finances in order and never disrespects a woman that you never met for money !!! Get a grip

Scam and cut off communication
by MommyOf4Kiddos Tue Jul 21, 2015 3:00 pm
Not trying to defend him but I was never asked (yet) to send any of my money, just the money that is supposed to be wired into my account. That is what had made me question if this was a scam.
But I did notice some things different now then when we first started talking with his grammar and such.
