I was profiling a scammer, and here is my story. I hope by writing this, I can save other people from falling into his trap.
I am very active in social media channels. Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Pinterest, Periscope, you name it, I am there. Around two weeks ago, someone sent me a DM (Direct Message) on Twitter. To be able to receive and send a DM, both parties have to be following each other’s Twitter account. I had no idea how I came in contact with this guy. I have thousands of followers, and who knows who followed who first.
His name is Andrian Smith. Although I told him I am married, he’s still communicating and flirting with me. I have to tell you, my gut told me instantly that he’s not legit, but I played along to find out more about him. We communicated through Twitter DM, text, and email.
He is very well-educated (two bachelors degrees and a masters degree), smooth talker, funny, supportive, curious about you, and makes you feel good about yourself. His response is tailored to your story, and his answer is always smart. If you didn’t know better, you would believe that he is a very intelligent person. He has one son, Cameron, aged 4. He was married but his wife passed away long time ago. He refers her as his “late wife.” He was born in Girona, Spain. Moved a lot as a child, especially to Montreal, Canada. He’s been living in the USA for 8 years now.
His grammar and spelling are immaculate; unlike other scammers who misspell a lot of words. His “I am” is perfect (with capital “I”); with exception of his “it is.” He usually says “is” like in “is okay.” His grammar and punctuation marks are fantastic (I am a grammar and punctuation freak).
Within three days, he confessed his love for me; despite of my marital status. He also broke the news to me that he would be leaving for Dubai, UAE, for “the biggest job he will ever do” on a private EDP drilling contract to handle fluid control in a rig. He also said he will be in charge of changing microprocessors in some units. See? He tries to present himself as an expert engineer, and he is very convincing. He asked me to download Viber so we can text and talk while he’s abroad.
During our brief contact, he didn’t ask any money (yet) or told me any sob story, but I couldn’t continue to communicate with this guy–knowing he’s just a persona. So I fabricated a story, telling him my husband knows about us. He still insisted that we continue our love affair.
After leaving him hanging for two days, I finally confronted him and told him my suspicion. I asked who he really is. Oh boy, was he mad. Calling me crazy, sick, to leave him alone, that I didn’t know half the story of what he has been trough to come to this country. He tried to guilt-trip me. He unfollowed me and blocked me on Twitter now. Good riddance.
