Information on romance scams and scammers.

I recently joined a gay dating website & have in the last 48 hours been contacted by an individual stating his name is Chris Williams [email protected]. While everything seemed normal, I received an email this morning from him stating that he is Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and is in Sales of Sculpture, beads & gold. He mentioned that his mom was from the United Kingdom and his dad from Australia. My intuition told me something was not right here after reading more of the letter. If his parents were English, how come his written English wasn't? I have had a look at other letters on this site & there seems to be other letters posted of similar context. Please find a copy of the letter below. Is this a scam and what can I do about?
**How are you today dear? Hope ok. Sorry for my late reply i have been very busy. My job took most of my time.i am into the Sales of Sculptures , beeds , gold, well befor i forgot right now i am presently in kuala lumpur Malaysia for a business trip which will end in three day now.. you know! Really am attracted to you and write to know you more. Please tell me what you likes and what you dislikes, I love being honesty and attentive at each others good and bad times! i came out from a good combination of two,my Mom is from UK while Dad is a Australia
.I am the one and only child of my parent, i will count it ,I have a big Family because i dont know much about my mum family in UK while my Dads part is very small...Unfortunatly i lost my dad in a car accident, this happened about 8years ago,and my mother I am afraid she is not having a good relationship with me since she disliked me when she found out I was a gay year now. She will not understand how normal and wonderful I feel inside for my love as a gay. I do not even expect her to understand since she is not one!since then i have started to live my life by myself and not depending on my family, although i still miss my Mom because of the courage and advises she use to give to me about life , but i am glad i am whom i am today.but right now i am ready to relocate to any where in the world I don't worry about what people think of me...I know how to treat a man well still yet...

I am really interested in wanting to know about what makes you the special person you are today, I want to know more about your family, your background, your life experiences, past relationships, your goals and dreams, your interests, and anything else you want to tell me. I even want to learn about the secrets you very rarely share with someone!. So come on and share it all with me, as I am not here to talk to you about general things such as partying, the weather, sports, e.c.t. I want to learn about you and what makes up your heart and soul, as the friendship I want to build with you I want it to be like no other you have ever shared in or experienced. This friendship I want to build with you will be filled with substance, quality, spirituality and potential.

I look forward to hearing from you soon!

It's a certain scam, the writing shows elements of being written by someone of West African origin and there are a number of regular scam elements there (being overseas, strange heritage (to account for his accent), no contact with immediate family).

No doubt he will have some sort of emergency in the next few days that will require you to help him out financially.

The best thing to do is block him and don't respond any further. Do not accuse him of being a scammer as he will just deny it and carry on trying to scam you.

Please do not tell scammers that they are listed here - it will take them seconds to change their fake details and their new details will not be listed for any future victims to find.

The writing is certainly and obviously that of a Niger-Congo speaker (not necessarily West African, I've seen writing of South Africans that is similar). He could actually be in Malaysia, but he is not from there. There are many African expatriates in Malaysia. Ignore all further messages from the scammer.

Welcome, Airborne. Just to expand a little on what Alan and VX have said the other parts of his "sob story" are to designed to get you in a "I feel so sorry for this poor guy" mode of thinking. If he can convince you that life has made him the worlds biggest victim, then the rest of scamming you is easy. You will make allowances for his behavior you would not do otherwise.

Please see this article , it explains why we do not want free accounts (or low cost) scammers use reported anywhere.

It can not be stressed enough to just drop all contact with the scammer, now before you get emotionally attached. Just sort of "fall off the face of the earth". Leave him guessing why you stopped contact, do not tell him you are going to stop contact at all, he has a list of 500 reasons why you need to stay. Please Do not make him a better scammer by giving him more opportunity to learn from his mistakes. :)
