Information on romance scams and scammers.

Hello all,
My father is in his 60's and recently broke up with his on/off again girlfriend of several years.
I didn't think much of it until one day he came home from work and had a new webcam in a box. Curious about this (he's never used a webcam, ever) I asked and he immediately said "I need it for work"
He has a home office so the next day I went downstairs to print some pages for my own work, and his gmail account was up on screen. Lots of emails from a website "colombiancupid.com" and I had also noticed he has booked a hotel room for Colombia for this summer. I am not sure he's ever even been abroad aside from a cruise, and this all seems a little out of character for him.
He speaks no Spanish, and I can't for the life of me figure out why some random woman in Colombia has any real romantic interest in him. I'm becoming more worried as I research into foreign dating scams, and also some of the reviews of this website I've seen on sitejabber.
Does anyone else have some experience with this? What can you say to a parent / loved one who is getting involved in something like this? It seems that his skyping sessions with this woman are becoming more frequent and probably more sexually oriented. He is speaking into a translator on his phone in order to communicate with this woman. I live with him so I have overheard some of the things he's "translating"

Is he walking into a trap? Am I just being paranoid?
Thanks in advance.

Its impossible to tell . What I can say is the internet is full of all types of scammers . You can read some of the feedback on that site here :

https://www.sitejabber.com/reviews/www. ... ncupid.com

But you have to take into consideration that feedback can be faked either to the positive or to the Negative . On a side note I did notice that the feedback is mostly either extremely negative or extremely positive . Kind of unusual . I have a suggestion . Put a profile of your own on their and do a little investigating that way you can find out for yourself whats going on .

So, update to this story. I was able to access his email and kind of get a vibe for how this conversation he has had with this person went. Turns out, she was in a 'car accident' and two days later there was a western union confirmation sent to this person for several hundred dollars.

I am convinced that this is a scam now. Unfortunately, upon confronting my father he became extremely aggressive, shouting at me and going into an incoherant rant. I stayed calm and presented him with around 40 pages of information about scams, many of which outline his situation pretty damn closely.

I am very concerned that he is going to withdraw and not listen to anything I have to say at this point. I also think it is a dangerous idea for him to travel to meet this person, as my father speaks no spanish and has real out of country travel experience.

Any ideas or responses would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I should also make note that my father has purchased a webcam and seems to have late night (11 -midnight) skyping sessions with this person. The woman doesn't speak any English and my father no spanish, so he's been using his phone to attempt conversations. Listening in from the other room I can tell these have become more sexual in nature as time has progressed. I am also worried he may have sent compromising pictures of himself /video

He showed me a picture of this person last week before I confronted him and of course, the woman in the picture looks like a freaking model. Just thought I should include that tidbit.

Unfortunately, these low-life scammers are very good at convincing their victims and will do everything they can to have their victims exclude their family.

Could you get your father to visit our forum here to see the hundreds of scams just like this one?

I certainly will try. I have been working with my brother and let him know about the situation and we're trying to talk to him.

Looking back into the wire transfer, i also just noticed that the 'woman's phone number is the area code for Beverly hills, CA.. not Colombia. Another red flag for me.

Try reporting it to Western Union, too. I'm not sure they will let you do anything since it's your father that sent the money, but maybe it's worth a try?

I'm sorry this is happening, let us know if there's anything we can do to help.

If you can private message someone with the Womans Name , Skype ID , Telephone Number and Email Addresses , someone can do some searching and see if any of these are being used in other scams . Typically these romance scammers have multiple profiles .
