Information on romance scams and scammers.

Hi. I am grateful for this site. I'm so sorry though for all the heartache and aggravation everyone has had to go through with scammers.

I became suspicious recently when a 5-Star General in the US Army contacted me by DM on Instagram. He has three photos on his Instagram page, one in the background with President Obama. I won't mention his name until I get some feedback because I don't want to embarrass anyone. For one, he hasn't asked for money. Another thing that is different from what I have read here is I am not single. I told him up front I am happily married and a grandmother so I'm confused about why he would target me.

However, I became suspicious when he was very quickly affectionate -- a bit inappropriately so. Another thing that didn't jibe was when he said he was going on patrol. He claims to be on a peacekeeping mission in Kabul. My dad and uncles were US Army. Unless things have changed a lot, I don't think a 5-Star General is required to go on patrol. But then perhaps things are different on a peacekeeping mission.

I'm the perfect target for scammers because I love to meet new people, and I trust people until given a reason not to. It really is unfortunate that so many folks here have been given reasons not to trust. I believe most people are good, but those who aren't can really make it tough very quickly for the trusting.

I would really appreciate some feedback before I post his name, etc.

Thanks so much!

He's definitely a scammer. Real soldiers (especially ones of the rank he is claiming) wouldn't be chatting with random people on the Internet.

Just because you are married and not looking for a relationship doesn't mean that the scammer won't come up with an angle to be able to scam you, and the money request will come eventually. Romance scammers can go for months without asking for money, until they think their victim is fully believing their lies.

Please post all the details you have on this scammer, including any email addresses and telephone numbers and a link to his Instagram account.

Please do not tell scammers that they are listed here - it will take them seconds to change their fake details and their new details will not be listed for any future victims to find.

He contacted me via Google Hangouts. So I just point-blank asked him. He has no idea I'm on to him. And he gave it to me.

What is the next step?
