Information on romance scams and scammers.

I received this email shortly after I was asked by a man I've been chatting with for the past month he is in Iraq so he states, he saw my profile on wayndating.com so we started chatting and of course being vulnerable I allowed him to sweet talk me and now I've think I've been scammed I actually did go and do this for him on Monday paid $385 to a person in Victorville, Ca a Rosemary Cagle. today I received a payment confirmation email stating what kind of equipment it was and that they should receive the phone by Monday and I would get another confirmation email indicating the phone number and other registration settings that I need to complete. This man has asked me to marry him and he said he would have his grandmother's attorney set all the paperwork together and that there was another payment that need to be made for the release of his bonus check and he wanted my personal information bank info etc to complete this. He got offended when I asked him why he said to trust him....but I am not feeling comfortable I know it's a scam I believe it in my heart it's too good to be true. What should I do when I get this phone number should I stop all communications, should I continue this farce maybe just give him a little bit of his own medicine. I need help to sort through this, I really haven't fallen in love with this individual just getting over another scammer I just don't get what this world is going through. Are we the desperate ones or are they just looking for good hearted women to make our lives a living hell.... help please! His name is Corbin McCloud - email if anyone has come across him [email protected]

Hi mica66!
I'm sorry to say that your instincts are correct. You're most certainly dealing with a scammer. Yes, these criminals prey on good hearted people. They will say anything to suck you in and get you to start sending cash. Read this thread regarding phones for soldiers: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=16316
I'm really sorry that you lost some money. Thankfully you found this site, where you will find a ton of info to help keep you safe in the future.
Would you please find the headers on one of his emails and post it here? If you haven't done it before, this will help you find them: http://www.ip-adress.com/faq/view_email_header/

Thank you for your support, I checked the IP address and one of them is from England the other is from a Satellite provider which is the similar IP address from this ts2 tech center. I will be checking here if anyone has been scammed by this same individual.

Hello,

I've also nearly been scammed by this person. What struck me the most while I was reading your post is how closely your information matched what he's said to me and asked me to do. I am currently gathering information and trying to decide upon a good course of action.

I met "Corbin" in January...he also asked me to get a phone...$300 was the cost I was quoted. Same techcenter addy, he's also asked me to marry him, and also wanted money sent to his grandma to process leave paperwork.

I don't think we should take this lying down, do you? If you want to talk further, I can be reached here or at my email... Hope all is well for you

Mod note: I removed your email adress from your post so it doesn't get collected by spambots or scammers. Please use the PM system to contact eachother - Michael

No personal email addresses in the forums please (this is for your own safety as we deal with criminals). Please use PMs for anything you want to discuss privately. You can of course swap email addresses by PM.

Stop communicating with this scammer. You know that it is a scam and nothing good will come from trying to stay in communication with him.

Their arguments or presentations to get you to send money are convincing. End the temptation and block their email address. You may get an influx of scam emails now since you have paid one time. Don't take the risk and just disappear.

Thank you for posting this information, it has already helped another person. Thank you for being a member here. :D

Thank you for the support I've received, how can we report this person to whom? I have met a person here to whom this individual has done the same thing. Same person, same pictures used!

Scammers hide behind the anonymity of the internet and fake email addresses. Finding a scammer is almost impossible. Getting something done to arrest or stop them is almost impossible.

Exposing what they do and educating others is the best deterrent. I appreciate your desire to do something to stop them.

Did you look into recalling the money you sent? It may be too late now. It could be worth a phone call or two.

The person's name you were given is probably the name of a person who is a previous victim, or someone who's identity was stolen.

I am glad that we have been helpful to you. :D

The person I sent the money to is actually here in the States in Victorville, Ca which is in the same State that I live in. I don't know how I would be able to track that down unless I make an inquiry to Western Union if someone else has used the same name for this purpose. I know it's too late for me now since this happen on the 28th of February and the money has been collected. The phone number that was issued is a country code from England, I know how these people can buy a SMS card with numbers and exchange them as often as they can possibly can. From what I've heard from the other victim is he posted a personal AD in the States I was found on a dating site wayndating.com. I know it's a lost cause and this person could be anywhere as far as I am concerned. Thanks for the information.

Mica,

While chances of prosecution are slim (since the scammer himself is in another country), for victims in the US, it's still a good idea to report the crime to IC3 per the link below.

http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx

In the meantime, thank you for the additional information you sent by PM--it may help us to help another victim who is mixed up in this scam!

Hi everyone,
I have come across the same scam this guy who said his name was Anthony Kirby contacted me via a dating site DateHookup, he sent me a message saying he is in Afgan and is a translator in the American Embassy. He stated in his orginal message he was relocating to TN after he comes back to the states. He then gave me this email address:Anthony Kirby <[email protected] and ask me to chat with him via yahoo messenger ID is: smilesformiles422 said that he wanted to talk that way, instead of on the dating site, after a few days of talking back and forth he then said he won't be able to get back on the internet because only high ranking officers are allowed to access it and that his good friend Mike has been letting him sneak in to use after office hours. He said he really wanted to stay in touch with me and that if I emailed a tech center email address: "Tech Center" <[email protected]>I could get a free phone to talk with him for Miltary personnel and he gave me the following information to put in the return email: Name-Anthony Kirby ...Rank- Deputy Director Languages Dept. Location-Kabul, Country-Afghanistan.
When I received the reply from the tech center email it stated : Free unlimited calls for Military Personnel after the
($256USD) registration fee(s) have been remitted. Please be informed
that your fund will be refunded back to you 3hours after connection
with your partner. It is a free service but funds are charged due to
security reasons.

I knew there was something wrong at that moment and luckily I did not fall for this and did my research which in turn I found this website with the same scam just different name. He also send me some pictures which I am going to post on this site. Maybe that will at least keep someone from falling for this scam in the future. I need help putting the pictures on here, if you know how please let me know.
