Information on romance scams and scammers.

This Romance Scammer uses the site BBWCupid. As soon as we started talking, his profile on the site....disappeared. He claimed to be in Nigeria working on an oil spill for Chevron. Said he was divorced from a woman that walked out on him. Had an 8 year old son, (would never give a name) but the picture showed a child much younger. When asked...it was his favorite photo. He was slow, very methodical. Talked to me everyday. His English was not good...even though he had lived in the US till 12 and then was schooled in England...including a Master's Degree from Oxford! lol He finally got around to telling me of his woes. A broken oil pump....needing $45,000 to finish his job, to come home and see me. When I "offered" my savings of $2500, he immediately asked if I knew how to use Western Union. Commented on how this was brining us closer together.

I had figured he was a scam within the first few days, but let it play out. When I told him the only thing he was getting from me was the boot....he just couldn't understand. A fake? Really? It was laughable.

Sadly, he never would "send" me a picture. He had one or two up as his Yahoo Messenger ID, but that's it. I did manage a screen shot. I will try to get the picture from it pulled off and posted.

Hello

Good to see you saw through the deceit at an early stage. Be mindfull he may try again in a different way and character. You say you were then letting it "play out" you may consider that as possible baiting. If that is the case he may well have seen a change in your "online personality", be mindfull of the e-mail address you were using during that time, and consider if it is now compromised.

Good to see you saw through this scammer, your experience will help others

Sagely

And remeber to talk about it, when you have finished talking, talk about it a bit more.

Hello historygeek,

Please could you post the first two emails you received from Gerald Mark, plus his email address? This will be helpful to anyone else who has received similar mails, and googles parts of them, or the email address.

You might also like to add the email in which he requested money. Please make sure to remove your own name and any other personal details of yours before posting.

Once you realise that you are communicating with a scammer, please stop all contact immediately. Scammers are criminals, and you don't want to continue contact with a criminal who has information about you. It is possible to 'bait' scammers as Sagely says, but this must be done completely anonymously for your own protection. If you are interested in doing this, please visit our sister site:

where you will find much advice about this subject.
