Dear, I really appreciate if someone could tell me whether this man name as Declan Smith is United Kingdom or Malaysia. I met him in dating website two months ago. I suspected him as Scammer even though I have seen him on cam. He said he works as a lawyer in UK from his sentences while we chat but there are so many grammatical error.

Hello Kiara

The header you gave us shows that it is from Malaysia, and will be confirmed by a more experienced member.

My thoughts would be to follow up on this "intuition" you have on this character. It would help us here if you would post some of the content of your mails so we can get a flavour of what is happening. Its good you have come here...You will have total support.

Sagely

And remeber to talk about it, when you have finished talking, talk about it a bit more.

Yes, the headers point to Malaysia. Did this person say he lives in England or Malaysia. If he says he is currently in England, then you have a scammer there! Please post some of the emails he has send you.

Being a victim doesn't mean you stand alone. We're here to help you.

Hello Kiara

Having read the mail you have given leads me to a few conclusions, and personaly I have no doubt this is a scam. I wont say why just yet.

If you are ok with this, are you prepared to tell me your honest feelings when you saw this for the 1st time. Probably now that you have posted it for us you will view it differently. But I would like you to talk us through it. If I am correct you will find that your explanation will resonate with the vast majority. Doing this will help "educate" (I mean this losley) others.

Kiara

He is angry now because he is now "exposed". There are many ways he could react the anger is his own "self protection" kicking in. Even if this man was genuine the "he really got mad" should make "alarm bells ring.

My advice would be to break completley from this man. Be mindfull that he may now offer an appology to his outburst, and in doing so will "appeal" to your sense of forgiveness.

Thanks for posting that email Kiara. That phone number is a +4470 re direct number, it will connect you to the scammer's phone anywhere in the world. It looks British, but is very popular with scammers. There is some information about it here:
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=16485
Also, when you saw that white guy on webcam, you saw a pre recorded video. Some romance scammers use that technique to give more credibillity to their scam.
After confronting him he got angry, but i bet he will be all nice and sweet again, just to keep you hooked. It is best to stop writing to him, ignore and delete his incoming emails, and block him from chat. After a while he will realize that he can't get money from you and he will look for another victim.
Please read this very usefull post from one of our admins about romance scams:

Dear all,

Thank You for the replies and the advice. How can I alert the others in the said site that he is a scammer so that nobody will got scammed again.

Thank Yoy

Welcome Kiara,

Posting his name, email address, photos, and the letters he sent you (especially the early ones, and any mentioning money) ensure that if a victim gets suspicious and searches for information on him, they will find out he is a scammer. He will use the exact same letters again on others--that is how these scammers work.

Just from that one email you posted, it is very clear that this is a typical African romance scammer - no surprise, as there are many African scammers operating from Malaysia. I can see the combination of his writing, with the typical English mistakes of an African, and parts with better English that he copied.

Like many scammers, he didn't pay attention to what he was copying, either.

For example:
Those first kisses we had are the treasure I will never forget.

This makes no sense. You haven't met face to face. You have not had any first kisses (and never will, because he is not the person in the photos). He didn't pay attention that fact when he copied that line from this online love letter: http://la.myspace.com/jess2369/blog/509558251

Adding:

In doing a quick search, I saw your post over on the other forums, and what you are describing is definitely what is known as the "black money" scam. Sometimes it is called the "wash-wash" scam by the scammers themselves.

Just to make it clear, Kiara--it's not money laundering, because there is no money. For a detailed explanation, please follow Sagely's link, but here's the short version.

-The scammer may show you a photo of lots of money. He doesn't have that much money, he just copied the photo.
-The scammer tells you that the money has been covered with an ink or dye or some chemical so that it doesn't look like money, in order to ship it without it being known that it is money.
-The scammer may even send you pictures of this "black money" and photos or video of how they take the dye off with the chemicals. In some cases, he or an accomplice might even meet you and demonstrate it in person.
-Then the scammer will have you pay for these chemicals.
-Eventually you may have "money" delivered to you. The chemicals won't work, and the scammer may tell you that you have to buy more. In reality, the chemicals will never work, the only real money used was the money in the demonstration. What the scammer has actually sent is black paper, cut to the same size and shape as money.

Dear all,

Thank You for the info. I gained a lot of knowledge from this site. Really I appreciate it. But please anyone tell me is there any scam involving stamped money (not black money). Money sent in a trunk but they stamped the money and shipped into the country. I've read it somewhere and saw images in google images but I'm not so sure. I just want to know the tactics used by the scammers.

Thank You
by Dotti Wed May 11, 2011 9:03 pm
Kiara,

Stamped money is actually the same scam as black money. Scammers claim that the stamps stop the money from being detected, just as the black ink supposedly keeps the money from being identified by authorities.

The scam is the same, except instead of black paper, the scammer will use blank paper or even poor quality fake bills.
