Military Scam

Hello Scamwarners,
About a week ago I was on a singles website called Singlesnet.com where I have met some great gals and I came upon a profile. She was attractive and had a short profile. I asked to talk with her and she flirted with me. She immediately asked me if I had a Yahoo IM account I said yes and gave it to her. She said she was in the Army and was serving in Iraq. I gave her my home email account too and work email account. Her emails immediately were saying I Love you etc. I know someone from the military and she said these were legitimate things( her rank, where she was, what company she was in. I can text her too through Yahoo. Then she started asking about getting a Ts2 air card for her laptop. she said I could email a request to either of these three accounts. One came back and I googled it and it sent me to you guys. Here are the email accounts. [email protected]

I received a reply from [email protected] and it of course was asking for 455.00 dollars. She also was wanting me to put in a request for leave for her. I have emails from her if you would like them. Scammers often copy details from real soldiers' facebook pages, etc. so that information is often accurate, because it is stolen from the profile of a real soldier. Of course, the scammers usually drift pretty far from reality when it comes time for the money requests.

The more information posted, the better for preventing others being scammed. You can just reply to this topic and copy and paste the text of the emails (remove your own name) into your post--chances are good that most of these early emails are scripts being used over and over again which is why we like to have them posted. For photos, there is a link in my signature line that tells you how to post.

You can see how the English gets better and worse. The poor English is is own writing, and a quick search confirms that the better English is copied.

This is very typical (and I see he has been visiting the romance sites again).

The scammer knows that you aren't completely hooked at this point in time and the money requests are causing you to back off. He (the truth is the person sending the emails is most likely a male) also thinks he still has a chance to get money from you later.

He withdraws the money requests, pretending he doesn't want any money from you, he/she just loves you. This will be followed with loving, romantic emails with no mention of money for days to weeks, sometimes even months. He wants to convince you that "she" and the "relationship" are real. This strategy has worked at times with victims who really want to believe--they think the person must be real because a scammer would walk away if he didn't get the money. The truth is, if the scammer thinks there is still potential to get money, he will be patient and wait for the next opportunity. Once he thinks you are better hooked, he will invent a new situation requiring money.

We refer to "hooked" because scamming is a lot like fishing (and the scammer sees his victims--the "fish"--as objects, not real people). When the fish bites, the scammer starts to reel in the line. If he moves too fast, the fish may start to fight and he risks losing it, so he will relax and even release some of the line until he has the fish under control. Then he will once again start to reel the line in, more slowly if necessary.

The best thing you can do is cut off all contact and move on with your search for a real person.

If he keeps emailing you, it may help others to post the new emails. Just don't respond to the scammer, as he will take any response as an indication that he should keep going.

As far as the photos go, it's always good to post them all, as you never know which ones may be used on others--so if you are willing to post them, please do.

I have recently met a guy online who claims he's a senior doctor with the UN Army and said his name is Collins Brent (email address: [email protected]) deployed to work in peace-keeping missions. So far, he's been to Afghanistan, then to Libya and then in Nigeria. How do I verify that he's indeed with the UN Army?

Only until recently, he said one of the soldiers died and he's sick of staying in such dangerous place and seeing corpses daily but the only way out of that place was to send for Leave Request (which spouses or family members can put up and not himself). Once he's out, he will put up a Retirement Request to the Army and to start life afresh. So I figure why not help him out since I don't lose anything. And he asked me to write to [email protected] which sent a Policy & Agreement Form to me. I would like to verify if this is indeed true but not sure how to post up a jpg. file. Already knew this is gonna be a scam but wanted 2nd opinion.

Sorry. It's a scam. No doubt about it whatsoever. The only person who can ask for leave is the soldier him/herself. The idea that a third party has to do it is a common feature of many romance scams. Thanks for your reply and advice. Yes, you are absolutely correct. I did receive an email from the army asking me to fill up the Leave Form but if you google the address on the Leave Form (93rd Ave, Abraham Dave St, Washington DC, WA with a strange font type), there isnt such an address in this world. How stupid of these scammers...

Later today or tomorrow I will separate your scammer into his own topic to make it easier for other targets to find his information quickly. In the meantime, in addition to the fake form, can you post any emails you still have from him in this thread, as well as photos he sent you? Just remove any references to your name, location, etc. These emails are usually scripts that will be reused on other victims so posting them can be very helpful.
