Information on romance scams and scammers.

Was on a site called Bikers or not last night 6/28/2011, when a guy "Robert3221" in U.S Army fatigues ,sitting in a vehicle, flipping the bird, with what looked like the countryside of the northern parts of the states, sends me a friends request. (He did say he was from Maryland, so it is possible the picture was taken before deployment). Read his profile before I accepted, and he seemed/looked to be genuine. Before the night is over he's talking about my sending money to his commander so he can get a phone card and if things work out between us he could get a early release home from his tour. So, being the daughter of a WWII Army Veteran, having family in the Military, and knowing better, I went along with it. He gets me on yahoo, messages me with a picture of a cute little girl on the IM, who he claimed to be his daughter. He's chatting away then gives me his commanders yahoo screen name so I can talk to this guy. The commander, robertmosher26, aka Commander Troxell, IM's me and then gets on the web cam. First off, he didn't look like military. Hair was not shaved, wore a T-shirt with a Army logo on it, smoked 3 cigarettes in the 10 minutes we talked, and I could tell he was sitting in a really nice apartment. He went on about how I must keep "Robert" happy and send cash so he can get phone time in order to talk to me. When I was done listening to the chatter of robert3221, I checked out this "commanders" yahoo profile and there was a comment posted to it from a women that claims he is a imposter and nothing more then a scammer. He is either stupid and does not check his profile comments or he is real and don't care what is posted....
Today, "Robert" messages me on yahoo about how much he enjoyed our talk last night, that he loves me, that "I'm the woman he has been waiting for" line of crap, can't wait to talk to me again and that talking via phone would make things so much better between us, blah blah blah, but be sure to send the money.... He is suppose to be stationed in Lybia and I wasn't aware any of our military people were even stationed there. Anyway, I had enough of the bs and I let this guy have it but good. He comes back at me with threats that hes going to kick my ass because I am disrespecting him and his commander and that I haven't heard the last of him. Not more then 10 seconds after that he's calling me honey, baby, sweety in a IM, again reminding me to make sure that I send the money so we can talk.. Not sure if I should have posted their names on here, but I did so others don't fall for the line of crap.
In all the years I have been involved with Service people, not once have I ever heard that they could get a release from their tour unless it was a emergency, let alone get a early release because phone conversations go well. Below is the copy of the comment posted to the "commanders" profile.. Oh and I went back into Bikers or not to check on the "other" Roberts profile after I let him have it and it was deleted.. Again his name is [email protected]
I think it is a dam shame that people have no morals and will go as far as using the United States Armed Forces to scam people. There has got to be a way to stop this from happening. Whether or not these guys were real or not, I do not know, but Robert became very angry when I called him on the scam and insisted he was a REAL military soldier..

I forgot to post on my comment that these guys wanted $250.00 for the phone that would last until "robert3211" was released to go home. This service would only provide him to speak with me only. As for a picture of robert3221, I couldn't get it due to his deleting his profile. Sorry...

Hello bkrstHD!

Sounds like a typical military scan and unfortunately very common. There are many topics about this type of scam on this site. What you did is the best thing that can be done by posting the information here. It will help expose the scammer when someone else who searches for him.

Thanks for posting!

Thank you Justin, just wish I had thought of getting his picture off that site before he deleted it, but then again it could have been a perfectly legal picture of a military soldier. If I do hear back from him I will pass his messages on to this site, but I reamed him pretty good so he might not bite back. Two can play this fishing game but unfortunately some take the bait. Thank you again...

Most likely it was a legitimate picture of a real soldier. Scammers usually just find suitable photos online and copy them. We are also seeing an increase in faked webcam, in which a scammer edits and loops existing video to convince the target that he/she is talking to the real person on webcam.

As far as baiting goes, assuming the profile you were using when you met him has some connection to your real life details, it is actually better that you not try to bait him. You can go over to our baiting site, 419eater.com, for more info about baiting safely and anonymously.
