Information on romance scams and scammers.

hi, I've recently being conntacted by a guy on facebook - he is responding to an add I put on. The english he uses and the mail itself seem to be in order but what makes me suspicious is that he doesn't have any other friends. However according to the profile he only joined fb 4 days ago and we all have to start somewhere. Am I just being too suspicious after my scam expereince? He is a black guy - would a scammer ever use a picture of a black guy? Is this a new twist on us poor unsuspecting females?

Hi may,

Yes a scammer may use a photograph of a black person on their profile. Also, some scammers may use their own photographs (especially if they intend to appear on webcam to you) and, of course, some scammers are black.

You are right to be cautious, so do be careful about giving out personal information at this early stage, and check as you go along, getting to know him (or any other person), for any signs of untruths or a scam.

oh thanks Chris for your quick reply and words of advice. Yes I will be very cautious and carefull and on my guard for anything fishy. I've had 3 replies to my add on fb and the other 2 I knew straight away were scammers.

Hi May,
you might try to get an email from your friend instead of chatting only. When you submit the email complete with its header here we can analyse it.
