I'm sorry your friend is in trouble.
Yes, this person must be a scammer: If there are no US soldiers in Nigeria he must be lying. That is proof enough.
As for the phone number, the scammer wants her to contact him, so it is a working number, but certainly not one belonging to the US Army.
If you friend is still in doubt, then please post the number and the scammer's email so we can analyse them.

Posting the number is a good idea either way, as the scammer will likely use the number in other scams, and having it posted will help others who might otherwise be scammed.

Unfortunately, though, I can tell you a few things already:

1) The scammer is a Nigerian man who is currently in Nigeria.
2) He is using a computer connection that cannot be traced back to him (most likely an internet cafe used by hundreds of people, if not, the IP will be one shared by many computers).
3) He has not shared his real name or any real information about himself. The photos he sent her were simply copied from the internet somewhere.
4) If he gave her a Nigerian number, the phone will be a pay-as-you-go cellphone and won't be traceable. If he gave her an American number, it will either be a magicjack number or a hacked voip number. Once again, neither will actually trace to the scammer. If he gave her a "UK" number it will be a free redirect number that is also forwarded to his anonymous cellphone.

The "army number" is just a number he made up to make him seem more real. Scammers do this all the time--victims start to think "He must be real if he has a number..."

He wasn't very original, either, just started counting 23456789 and moved the 2 to the back...It's also the wrong number of digits to be a real social security number.

The phone number will be a nontraceable Nigerian cellphone.

THE EMAIL ADDRESS [email protected] has a listing as a scammer, and produces a profile with photo on
http://www.myspace.com/48196374.
I don't know if this is the same scammer or just yet another one

Thanks for posting the additions. The army number is a fake and has been copied from another webpage which is not relevant to anything. Please ignore any correspndence from the scammer and it will go away.

Welcome to ScamWarners bebe. Can you please tell us more about the situation you are involved in. Also posting the email address is helpful too.

Many scammers pretend or claim to be engineers with the army. They are not. If this person is asking you for money for any reason stop communicating with them and block their email address.

If they are under investigation, there is nothing you can or should do about it. Any request for money is a scam and even if they say they will bay you back, they will not.

All of those area codes are from Michigan.

Thank you for any additional information you can present.
