Information on romance scams and scammers.

Hello everyone! I am glad I found this site. I almost got caught into this kind of scam. Let me begin that he uses the name Howard Lane and his yahoo address is howard4550@yahoo, posing as a civil engineer working on a new bridge in Nigeria. I met him in chemistry.com. He claimed that he was cancelling his account soon and he would like to get in touch with me thru email. So we chatted many times in yahoo on two different occasions. Then I had the urge to check my checking account and found 5 unauthorized charges that were done on the same days I was chatting with Howard. But the charges came from Canada. I got concerned but I thought it was a coincidence, but I was still skeptic so I logged in from my Yahoo messenger instead when I chat with him. He suddenly professed his supposedly great love for me (all this from chat and pictures I sent him) and claims he and his son Jeffrey will be so happy when we will be together. I, the fool, mentioned to him something about my unauthorized charges. Then he got sloppy. Thinking he could no longer access my account, he sent me a so-called contract that he will be award $3million. it really looked so fake. So I googled his email address and he appeared on another dating website with the exact picture and profile. I then googled his name and state and found out that it belonged to an elderly. Then I googled the address on the "contract" and discovered it does not exist. It even mentions that there is no bridge being built in that city. So, I made up a story to him that I found another man who will make me happy. He was pretending to be broken hearted and insists we stay together. I told him that when he gets back, he can call me but he never really addressed that.

Welcome to Scamwarners purpleheart.
That's a typical romance scam all right, but unauthorized charges on your checking account aren't typical. They usually persuade victims to send them money. So I'm inclined to think it was a coincidence and that you have another problem. Did you give him enough info to do this?

Purple heart are there other possibilities and Arnold is correct? Is there any possibility you have given someone information to enable account access? Responded to an email about your bank account being suspended due to some dodgy transaction? Are there any other matters that you don't know are a scam? PLEASE ASK US. WE DON'T WANT PIN NUMBERS OR YOUR PERSONAL DETAILS AND ACCOUNTS. We want anything a little different or unusual. We all have vast experience in dealing with scams. That you mention Canada rings bells with me. There is a healthy fraud industry originating from Canada, and it is possible that you have discovered a new angle or approach. Take a look and ask us.

I split this from the Kevin Kennedy topic so it could receive the attention it deserves.

Hello again, everyone! thank you for all your ideas. I must say that his Howard Lane might have installed a spyware on my computer when he sent his photos. I never shared any credit card information or any other vital information. I am always careful of that. The dates we were chatting were the same dates evertime my credit card was used and a few hours after we chatted. He made sure we chatted long enough to get the information he needed. Thank God my bank reversed the charges when I reported the unauthorized charges. As for the charges coming from Canada, he could have passed it on to the people he knows in there so as not to make it obvious-him being in Nigeria. Maybe these scammers are getting smarter. So please pass this on. As I mentioned when he realised he cannot access my account anymore, he resorted to the old million dollar contract trick. By the way, if anyone has the time to google howard4550, it will now appear on a different web dating site. I actually reported him to chemistry.com and hopefully something was done about it. Any thoughts?
