Information on romance scams and scammers.

Alias: Patrick Thomas Patrick
Email address: [email protected]
Used Yahoo messenger to chat with me, a lot.

Story: Met him on the Plenty Of Fish website. He told me he was a British soldier in the US Army. Sent me lots of pictures and told me he wanted to retire and get married. I would sit up long into the night chatting with him using Yahoo messenger.

In order to come to the UK to meet me he needed permission from his General (General John Allen, [email protected]) to get (what he called) "vocational leave". He asked me to email Gen. Allen, posing as his fiance, to request special leave. Gen. Allen then emailed in reply, telling me he would allow it, but there would be a £2220 fee for the paperwork which I would have to pay upfront (although it was strictly refundable).

At this point I realised this wasn't true. This person had played on my vulnerability, and I fell for it. Looking back I realise some of the questions he asked me during chats were a bit suspicious, but at the time he had slipped them in so as I wouldn't notice. The language in his emails, his chat and the email purporting to be from the General was terrible, full of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. This was clearly a man who's first language is not English.

I have emailed the US army to warn them, because Patrick Thomas Patrick is the name of a real soldier, and General John Allen is a real General, and the pictures he sent me are of a real man and his real daughter, and a real General (General Casey, former chief of staff, now retired).

I'm just glad I realised what was going on before it was too late. I feel stupid, and yet heartbroken. I don't want to tell anyone about this, I feel so ashamed for having been caught out.

Dont beat yourself up to much. Be glad you realised it in time. These scammers pull on the heart strings of thousands of people and they are frequently succesful in milking a lot of money out of innocent victims. For the record I was in the US Army and that is not how we go on leave.

Thanks Andy - they were never going to get money out of me - as soon as I read that email I knew - apart from anything else I don't have that kind of money! - I am just so angry, it is such a cruel thing to do, even without money being lost.

Thanks for telling your story and posting this information. It will help others avoid this scammer. I'm sorry you got involved with the scammer but glad you got suspicious before loosing any money or getting further involved with the scammer. I'm sure you will be more suspicious of people you meet on the Internet going forward.

Just thought I would let you know that this person if up to his old tricks again. He contacted me through the dating website match.com. Told me he was a British soldier in the US Military Special Forces based in Afghanistan. We have been talking for quite a number of weeks, he sent me pictures of himself and his daughter, talked about starting a new in England and how he was prepared to leave the army early, but I would need to send an email to his Major.Thankfully, due to the diligence of my own family, they uncovered him as a scammer. The photo's that he sent me are the same as those identified on your site. Although he hadn't approached me to send him any money, I think it was only a matter or time and careful grooming.

Is it possible to answer these questions:

Is it only Military personnel that have AKO email addresses or can a scammer make one up?
Is it usual to pay a one off fee (£250) to arrange a Ts2 Telecom Mobile with an MLT mobile line (NAT satellite). This phone will be loaded with unlimited credits.

Only soldiers can have military addresses, but that doesn't stop scammers from claiming to have one and giving you a bogus one.
-A real soldier can give you an email address that ends in .mil (no other ending, and nothing after the .mil).
-You should be able to send them an email at that address, and they need to receive it and reply to it.

If all of the above are not true, then they are not real.

No, it is not usual to pay anything to talk to a soldier. The military provides ways for soldiers to have contact with their loved ones. You (and the scammer) do NOT need to purchase a sat phone to talk, period. (And in reality $250 would not buy a sat phone with unlimited credits).

Am I correct in thinking that US Military only have their LAST names on their uniforms. or are there exceptions for Special Forces or regiments to have their first name on there instead?
by Dotti Thu Apr 26, 2012 11:47 am
You are correct. We ask that you never point this out to a scammer, though. It is better to pretend that you believe the worng information, so that they continue to make the same mistakes and are easier to identify.

babajaga captainthomas001 or [email protected] is a scammer so send no money.Consider search done. He wants you to apply for leave which he must do himself anyway. Soldiers never need to pay for leave so it's 100% scam and they have far more money/salary than us mere mortals, if any of it was even approaching true, which it is not. Ratt beat me to it below! :=)
