Alias: Patrick Thomas Patrick
Email address: [email protected]
Used Yahoo messenger to chat with me, a lot.
Story: Met him on the Plenty Of Fish website. He told me he was a British soldier in the US Army. Sent me lots of pictures and told me he wanted to retire and get married. I would sit up long into the night chatting with him using Yahoo messenger.
In order to come to the UK to meet me he needed permission from his General (General John Allen, [email protected]) to get (what he called) "vocational leave". He asked me to email Gen. Allen, posing as his fiance, to request special leave. Gen. Allen then emailed in reply, telling me he would allow it, but there would be a £2220 fee for the paperwork which I would have to pay upfront (although it was strictly refundable).
At this point I realised this wasn't true. This person had played on my vulnerability, and I fell for it. Looking back I realise some of the questions he asked me during chats were a bit suspicious, but at the time he had slipped them in so as I wouldn't notice. The language in his emails, his chat and the email purporting to be from the General was terrible, full of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. This was clearly a man who's first language is not English.
I have emailed the US army to warn them, because Patrick Thomas Patrick is the name of a real soldier, and General John Allen is a real General, and the pictures he sent me are of a real man and his real daughter, and a real General (General Casey, former chief of staff, now retired).
I'm just glad I realised what was going on before it was too late. I feel stupid, and yet heartbroken. I don't want to tell anyone about this, I feel so ashamed for having been caught out.
