This person tried to contact me from match.com and asked for my email contact. Then he sent me this:

[[email protected]]
Hello Dear,

How are you doing today? I thank you for giving me your email ID it show the progressive nature of our conversation, I am here to tell you more about myself as I did not give you a full introduction in the match.com. Here are some few things you need to know about my background.

My name is Michael Peters from Lancaster(England),united kingdom and the only child of my parents but my father is late leaving only my mother as my only parent. My mother is white south African while my father is a Briton.I had my university Education in University of Lancaster University ,where I obtained first and second degrees in mechanical engineering and Environmental Science respectively.currently,I am working as independent contractor in marine supply equipment to oil companies world wide(it is my father owned business that I succeeded after his death).but my Elementary and High school was in Cape Town South Africa due to my mother's influence in the family.Because of my fundamental educational background in South Africa and also the environment I found my self as a kid,my accent is more like South Africans. Now you understand I am British but mixed.

I am straight forward in my dealings that is why I am explaining all this to you my dear, but I do hope accent does not matter in a relationship but good heart, understanding, care and love. What I long for is nothing but a healthy relationship based on love, trust and sacrifice for one another.

I was married with a crown male child called (Michael Jr) well,I have been separated from my wife by death. This occurred during her second birth child which took the life of her and my second child. It happened two years ago,in fact I suffered two death in that year because my beloved father died the same year.I loved my wife so much but death never allowed us to fulfill our dreams. Now am searching for my soul mate,I want someone who will love me the way she loves herself.Who understand that family is sacred and should have respect and value for the family.Honest and sincere. I am moderate christian (Catholic) I do not believe in stereotype,I judge individually. What that matters in relationship is the good heart and trust.

I am currently in USA on a business trip but will be in UK in a couple of weeks.I will be glad if you can send me an introduction message.I have attached a few pictures of me and wish you can send me some of your pictures.Feel free to ask me any question.

I really wish to hear from you soonest.

Have a nice day.

Best Regards,
Michael Peters[/quote]
He sounds like a fraud to me, but I supposed I just want to make sure. His email style is new, I couldn't find much example of this, and I must say, the contents are quite convincing. Except the bad spelling and punctuations, and very strange use of phrases and names.

I'd post the pictures he had posted me, except I'm at work now, and all photosharing sites are banned from the intranet.

Hi Kyooko. What does the email header tell you? Do you see an ip number beginning with 41?
Yahoo doesn't offer any help I'm afraid. Just shows a person in a grey coloured jacket and been a yahoo subscriber since Decenmber 2009.

It's possible the the individual is good.

However if any requests for money are received, simply wrap a big chain and padlock around your purse and stop all forms of contact.

I think the email header is:

Return-Path: <[email protected]>
Received: from nm10-vm0.bullet.mail.sp2.yahoo.com (nm10-vm0.bullet.mail.sp2.yahoo.com. [98.139.91.198])

Okay, I just got a reply from him, I sent a short reply, and attached the same photo I had put in the match.com.

Return-Path: <[email protected]>
Received: from nm7-vm0.bullet.mail.sp2.yahoo.com (nm7-vm0.bullet.mail.sp2.yahoo.com. [98.139.91.192])

I had also searched the email address, and seemed like this had appeared once in a Brazilian yahoo forum, in association with an email saying he has cancer and offers to donate money to a good cause.

I just think that his english is very strange for someone with 2 degrees from Lancaster University, his punctuations and capitalisations dodgy. He doesn't address me by my name (which I had given in my reply to him), and yet he calls me "dear", like I had known him for a long time.

Somehow, the way his email is written reminds me of some of the other dodgy replies I had gotten before. And my defenses were definitely up, cos he was asking for my phone number. I did not give him my phone number.

I might miss someone really nice, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Hello Kyooko; you are right; the English is not correct for either a British person, nor for a white South African person. It is instead typical West African English, probably Nigerian.

The IP adress posted shows only Yahoo's own IP address - there may be another IP address just above the 'Date' and 'From' part of the header; this is usually the one which shows the sent from location.

There are many Nigerian people in Malaysia, and it is possible that he claims that he is travelling there because he intends to later ask you to send money to there - either to himself or an accomplice.

Hi Chris,
I'm not sure which ones are the right IP address, maybe this? (Pardon me if I am worried that I might release my own information by accident too. I think I am too paranoid, sometimes. )

I definitely get the feeling he is setting up for something, either him travelling to Malaysia and getting stuck there, or his child falling sick. I'm not sure how I should reply him, so I just gave a generic reply with some 'misinformation' spliced in. Right now, I am regretting even sending him my match.com profile photo, cos god knows what he might do with it.
by Arnold Tue Sep 20, 2011 6:27 am
Either just stop emailing him, or tell him you've been told he's a scammer without mentioning us, then stop replying. They can be persistent and he will probably insist he's not a scammer.
It's possible he may use your photo to pose as a woman to scam a man, but that won't affect you.And they usually steal professional modelling photos from the Internet.

Thankyou for posting the header Kyooko. I'm no expert but it's possible parts of the headers have been altered to hide the true origin.
The IP numbers are pointing to yahoo. When reading the received lines it's usually the bottom one is the originating source.
To stop wasting your internet time, you can simply stop responding to the individual and move on.
by Kyooko Tue Sep 20, 2011 8:38 pm
He takes a long time to reply, so for now, I don't really have much to do.

I suppose reposting his emails here might help to prevent someone else falling for it. I admit, the quality of this email is miles better than some of the generic replies I had seen before. I actually wrote out a personal reply to him thinking he was real, but only reluctantly removed most of the personal information after re-reading through his first email.

I think this shows that those scammers are getting better in their game, and it would be very important to share information, so that we can prevent future scams. I don't know if we can bring justice to all those poor victims, but so far, I don't see the Nigerian government doing very much to improve the situation, so I won't hold my breath on the local government working very hard to eradicate those greedy buggers.

Now the worry is, the scammers would 'improve' their quality of their English even more, and Improve their Impressive use of Unnecessary Capitalisation, that would make them even more difficult to detect. :yikes:

That's fine, post up as much as you feel.
I think the more info available can only be better in my opinion.
It is also important not to be confrontational and do not mention anything to the fraudulants they have been listed on a scam reporting site. If they think everything is good, they'll keep making the same mistakes within the next scam attempt. I have noticed some of the text in the scams has improved recently which is a worry.
I'm afraid bringing the scammers to justice is difficult. Some have been caught like the high profile case in the US a short few months ago but have not heard anything since. But it's only scratched the surface.
Education, vigilance and exposure are good defences. As a famous man was once reported to have said, "We have to match cunning with even more cunning".

Hi Kyooko,

I am glad that i discovered this website and saw your message. I have been victimized by this man. This man is a big time scammer. Stop communicating with him. He sent me the same emails he sent you. Unfortunately I fell to his scams. He is a fake. Trust your instincts.

Hi debbie_dave,

I'm sorry to hear that you had been scammed by this joker.

For reasons I do not know, this guy dropped me completely, he did not reply to my last email. Not sure if he realised I was onto him, or he just found better fish to fry.

I sort of understand how we are desperate to find that someone in our lives, and I hate these horrible scammers making use of our vulnerability to scam people like us.

Good luck in your search, and don't let a scoundrel like that put you off. Being here, and reading all the kind souls out here giving advice to people who seemed pretty desperate and lost, gives me hope that there nice souls out there.

I wish there is more that I can contribute. I get loads of spam mails in my email and I am tempted to post them all here. Some of those are so overused, they are a joke. :)

PS: I'm not going to end with "God Bless" cos that just makes me sound like one of them.

CAn you post the pictures you have of him? It is possible he could be someone from here already. He does sound much like a scammer. If you want to keep going on with his communication and find out, I'd keep it up...just don't get too involved emotionally and be prepared.
by Justin Mon Oct 03, 2011 7:46 pm
Hello!
There is no reason to keep communicating with the scammer he is only going to tell you more lies. It's best to just ignore him he will eventually go away.

Posting here does a great deal of good. The more information we have posted here about the scammers the more likely someone who searches will find the site and hopefully avoid the scammer.

Justin
