Hi
I found what seemed to be a perfect partner, on a dating site. Claiming to be a nurse in the us army based in afghanistan.
Cindy Edward [email protected]. She was at first acting like a real person. We cahtted on yahoo and video chatted for a while. Then she asked me to contact [email protected] so i can ask for leave for her so she can meet me. I live in the UK and no nothing about US Army.
Tell them its for your girlfriend. They replied straight away which i thought was odd. They did not ask for any money, but want details her name, stationed, based commander etc.
So no doubt the fee would come in some how.
I happen to stumble on to this site. its been a real eye opening and sad realization.
The email the army sent me is below:
Attn David Horrocks,
Your request was received and has been forwarded to all the necessary department of the US Army Transit grant for authorization. The Department of Defense will review the profile of the service member on behalf of which leave request is file and determine eligibility. you are to send us the name of the deployed officer and where is been deployed and what he/she is doing in the U.S ARMY, and the name of his/her base commander , and let us know how many months you are applying for .

Hi delotron. Very sorry to see you here under such circumstances.

As you have seen these scammers can be very convincing, and unfortunately they do take advantage of the fact that most people don't know the details of how military procedures really work. The "army" message you posted is a clear example - it sounds official and is full of the sort of jargon one might expect to see from a military source. Unfortunately the dead giveaway is the email address - the US military would certainly not use a free email provider (gmx.com) to do their official business.

From your message it sounds like you are now fully aware that this is a scam, but in case anyone else comes across this post, it may be useful to have a look at this post by Dotti who explains some important details of how US military leave really works:

I'm sorry you were scammed, but glad you realized the truth before you got any further.

I see you mentioned video chat. Just to make sure you know, scammers can and do create fake webcam using existing video--but in order to do that, they need a decent amount of video of the person. Often they use photos and video of internet porn actresses like Raven Riley because of the availability of video.
