Hi All,
Am wondering if this is just another scammer after reading several posts. I was contacted on a dating site ( Dating OverForty ) by a man claiming to be a Captain Kevin Smith who is from LA and serving time in Afghanistan with the military. His profile on the dating site says he is 53 from Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia. Very nice picture i must admit. After only exchanging a couple of messages on the site he asked if i had yahoo messenger in which we hooked up there and started chatting. What i feel is odd is every few messages comes the Smiles or mmmmmmmmmmmm sentence. He claims he is widowed and born on Jan 26 1958. He goes under the yahoo id of gentlekevinsmiles.. DOES THIS NAME SOUND FAMILIAR TO ANYONE. After exchanging a few emails and messages and i questioned him about phone calls he said i would have to send a email to a email address to request for a secured communication with him and it would cost me a fee of $550USD. After i sent the email they would contact me with payment details via Western Union. I being a little wise played along with it. He said he would have to ring his Sergeant to obtain the email address to send email to. 5 mins later he came back with the email address. I sent them a email and Captain Kevin within 10 mins of doing it said " hang on, phone ringing ". " Its from my Sergeant saying he had request for communication with me and they processing it immediately ". This would have been 7pm Afghanistan time. He came back to chat with me and said the request was approved and that he would be sent a form to fill out and i be sent payment details of where to pay the $550USD. He tried to arrange a time that he and i were both online to fill in the form but in the meantime could i make note of the payment details he was going to send me so i could make payment. Folowing this every 3rd or 4th message was reminding me of making the payment so we could talk on the phone.
What I would like to know is if this Captain Kevin Smith can join a dating site as well as send emails and chat on yahoo then why is he saying i have to make a request for a secured communication. I did read in a article whilst researching this that the military in Afghanistan dont stop soldiers for making contact with family or friends. This Captain Kevin Smith claimed he told is Sergeant that i was his finacee
IS THIS IS SCAM AGAIN   The email address he is using is [email protected] I would be grateful for any help on this matter thankyou

This

means that yes it is a scam. Soldiers in Afghanistan do not need special secured communication to communicate with people.

It is just a excuse to scam you out of your money.

Additionally, soldiers would not be using Yahoo email addresses, they would be using .mil address.

Please do not tell scammers that they are listed here - it will take them seconds to change their fake details and their new details will not be listed for any future victims to find.

Hello angelface66!

This is 100% a scam! This a very typical tactic by military romance scammers. It's all a lie soldiers do not pay money for secure communications. You said it yourself it doesn't even make sense he can join a dating site, email and chat but can't talk on the phone. He also does not understand military ranks but I won't point out the mistake as we do not want the scammers to get better by telling what they do wrong.

Just stop all communication with him and he will eventually go away. Glad you got suspicious!

Oh and here is a warning on the Army's website about this type of scam http://www.army.mil/article/36242/cid-w ... nce-scams/

Hi,
I have been contacted by an army Sergeant Kelvin Smith who claims he is in Afganistan. Within the first couple of days he is telling me how much he loves me. He has been in the army for 30 years and will be retiring in a month. He lives in Miami, Florida with his 15 year old son.

He first asked me to send him an iphone touch pad for his birthday so he can hear my beautiful voice. He would not give me a mailing address but an email address. I should contact this person by email immediately and he will come pick up the package and deliver it to him within a week.

He said he will be home January 15th. He really wishes he could spend Christmas with me and his CEO said he could have a couple of weeks off to come home, but he had no way to access he funds. I would need to send him the money for the plane ticket.

The last communication he asked me what I was going to send him for Christmas. Once again he had no mailing address, but I should contact his friend, a diploman, to come pick up the package.

This Kelvin Smith has broken English and texts me from 924-665-01. He always says he misses me so much and can't wait until we can be together forever, he loves me so much. He also asked me to download a webcam so he could see me. Of course his webcam was down from the heat in Afganistan. As well as his military email address. Only his yahoo account works.

Needless, to say, I have not sent Kelvin anything, nor have I contacted his friend. He sent me a nice picture of someone, I sincerely doubt it is him, in army fatiques. I am sure this is probably the same scammer you were dealing with.

Ryan Murphy
Hi, my name is Ryan Murphy. I'm a 53 year-old American male, currently in New York, United States. I last logged in on 8th Jan 2012 and I have 24 friends around the world.

Personal Note
I'm a gentleman first and foremost. I'm a straight shooter, not a B.S.er by any means. I can be shy, quiet & modest at times. In recent years I've become more outgoing and assertive and somewhat competitive due to my job , though it's not natural, I'm working on being more outgoing and assertive in my personal life. I'm proud of my accomplishments and I'm pretty happy with the way my life has gone so far. I'm close to family and friends. The one thing that has been missing in my life is that special someone to share it with. All I ask of a woman on this site is if she wants to meet a nice guy who doesn't play games, not into drama and who won't bring any baggage to a relationship and who has a lot of varied interests and is pretty open-minded email me and let's chat. Physical attraction is important so if you have current pictures of yourself it would be nice to see them. I love to cuddle, hold hands, long hugs and kisses. I'm generally very romantic and love to give flowers, a little gifts or an email or just leave a VM message for her just to tell her I'm thinking about her. I'd like to find someone to have fun with. Someone to build a long term relationship with. I like children and nature. I love taking long walks through interesting neighborhoods or area parks. Take a chance. Email me and let's see what happens.
