Information on romance scams and scammers.

I met someone on badoo who seems awfully nice and said he is based in UK assuming him having a UK accent when I spoke to him it came as a surprise when i heard his US accent. Also claims to have loads of money and now seeking to settle down however he is now in US to check on a project his father had initiated (oil) in Texas. My gut feeling is always strong especially after having got scammed before I can smell them so I checked the IP address and to my surprise came on this site as a listed scam IP addy.

This person claims to be half Iranian and half british, I have the feeling these scammers have made so much that they now have the luxury to travel around with ease. What surprised me most was when he asked me to call him on his US number as the UK roaming would cost him and someone who claims to be in love and who has sufficient money would never be so miserly especially with someone who is strugging.

I now have no doubts and am glad this time I am more alert. The person calls himself Dickens Fowler, the first name already was odd altho the second/surname is alright. Has not asked for money yet and even has promised to visit me but i have my strong doubts.

the email addy of the person is [email protected]

where can i post the pics to check if it is already posted ?

Welcome Pampha,

You can find instructions for posting photos in my signature line.

Please also post some of the emails he sent you--these will be scripts that the scammer is likely to reuse, and may help to alert others also.

There are certainly scammers in the US, and there are scammers who travel, but I suspect that this scammer is not in the US at all, and never has been. Based on the standard storyline and the name, he is most likely an African living in Africa or Malaysia. As you already pointed out, the name is an immediate red flag. A scammer who was actually in the US would be unlikely to make that mistake with the name, while it is very common for African scammers who have not travelled to the US or UK to confuse first names and surnames. (Please do not explain this to the scammer, as we do not want to educate them). If the IP address has set off flags already, it is most likely a proxy, and it is actually pretty easy to get a US phone number without being in the US, either with a magicjack or VOIP service.
