A real soldier can send and receive email from his .mil address.
It is important to know, however, that there are several domains that look like military domains that are not actually from the US military. For example, armymail.com and military.com email addresses are sometimes used to fool victims.

If a "soldier" tells you that he doesn't have a military address, or that he can't use it for some reason (for example because it was hacked, or for security reasons), then he is a scammer, not a soldier.

The truth is, there are WAY more fake soldiers than real on dating sites.

If he emails you from a yahoo account, he should be able to email you from his .mil account--and REPLY to an email from you to that account (this is important because the "from" address can be faked). If he can't or won't for any reason, you can be certain he is a scammer.

Befree,

I deleted your duplicate of this question. Having it in too many places causes confusion because all of the answers get split up.

I believe this is where the confusion is.

It is possible (unlikely, but possible) that a real soldier will approach you from a yahoo account. The truth is, he is most likely a scammer if he approaches you from yahoo.

But to confirm for certain: You should ask him for his .mil email address, and he should give it to you. If he will not give it to you, he is fake.
If he gives it to you, you need to send him an email at that address, and he needs to reply to it. If he cannot do this, then he is fake.
