Help Please. Is he a scammer?

I have been talking to a Daniel Joshua Barnes for a month or so. He is apparently deployed to Afghanistan. Grew up in California where his mum and sister still live, and he has a place in Iowa. He is an engineer in the army and went to college in California.

Whilst he has not asked for any money I am concerned regarding the amount of military scams around. I have no intention of sending money to someone i haven't met in person but i don't want to waste my time talking to some scammer who could be dangerous. I have photos if that is of any use.

he has sent emails and the email header ip address says it is coming from california
i have googled the images, name and email address and no hits have come up. I have also tried searching for the name on different scam sites and it hasn't come up.

Is he legit or is it a new name? Thank you for any assistance.

Hi Anon68 and welcome to ScamWarners.

It is very unlikely that a deployed serviceman would have time to spend on chatting with people on dating/social networking sites. Also, just because he hasn't asked for money yet doesn't mean that he won't - romance scammers can spend months building up their victim's trust before asking for money (or referring the victim to someone else who asks for it).

Also, just because he isn't listed here doesn't mean he is legitimate - it might be that the scamming identity is a new one that hasn't been discovered yet.

Many scammers continue to use the same script even after they change names and photos. For that reason, posting the first few emails the scammer sent (remove your own personal information--though often on review you will find that there is very little) will help future victims.

How are you doing today, i am really glad you replied as i do check on here to see if you replied but i can understand the fact that must be really busy lol, you must be a super woman to still have time to come on here, anyway i am glad you found the time to come around, i never knew the whether would rather be much like LA, i knows its kind of warm out there just didn't think there were similarities , you must have traveled a lot unlike me , i guess afghanistan should be it, never been any where , i hope to travel someday on a leisure cruise but for now i guess i am tied up with my duty to my country, hmmmm what can i tell you about me, well let me start from my family, i have a mum and a younger sister and thats just the bunch , not really use to seeing the extended family, dad died along time ago, was in the military too and i guess that has been my inspiration till date.........i moved out on my own anyway , i live in iowa now and i like my new place, very quiet and private cause thats the way i like to live, i am not really a people person but i socialise when i have the chance too, what more can i say, hmmmmm maybe i should give it a rest here and wait for your reply . i am glad you finally wrote back, i guess you must have been busy at work and with alot going on, i guess i really have to wait long for your replies anyway.............lol, i am glad to hear you are having fun this holiday, its good for the family to spend time together , brings about love and alot of closeness to the family, i have to say i like the way you talk and how you explaine things, you really are a lady that knows what she is doing, i dont think i have any question in particular that i would like to ask, i would love to get to know more about you ..............well my day here is kabul , i wouldnt say has a definate plan but i can tell you that the sun really burns down here, its just a normal routine duty on a millitary base nothing special................................................... hope you can come on here as often, maybe we could also talk on yahoo messenger if you have one and you wouldnt mind giving the address.........

How are you doing today, its quite nice to receive your reply really early too, it seem your your hols is going great for you, you have more time on your hands and could reply me early, i would like to say i hope you get to sign up for yahoo so we can talk more often, i would love to say i am someone that cherishes a woman like you, i love the way you talk, so classy and i would read 10 pages of your letter as you are so good with words that i can't say how much i really love to read from you everytime, having fun, cricket and going swimming its something i don't really know much about but i would love the have that in me too, read books and stuffs too but afghanistan aint too much about sites , desert area and not much to talk about . Hmmm about my work, don't really have much to say just the normal millitary routine , protect the base, go on missions and nothing so much serious but have to follow protocol, i lived on the base for a while but later moved to california where i told you my mum lives now, its been a complicated childhood but i am glad where i ended up, serving my country, ........
