Information on romance scams and scammers.

Hi,

a guy named David Tripp contacted me on a canadian dating site (he is a paying member). We soon switched to writing emails (of course he has a yahoo-account). In his profile he claims to be a widower with a teenage daughter. In his emails (and yes, he is writing daily) he claims to be an american soldier, deployed in Afghanistan.
I am quite cautious and what i didn´t like from the beginning, was that he didn´t really answer my questions. But then he wrote that he would like to talk to me on the phone and i had to make a request to have my phone number registered in the military´s database via email ([email protected]) and that had my alarm bells ringing. I thought military email ends with .mil ??

That´s his email:
Hi , How are you doing? Hope you are having a nice time in Dusseldorf? You are just on my mind here. Yeah the satellite tunnel is very clear. All you need do is to write that you are requesting for satellite tunnel to connect with Master Sergeant David Tripp(21B) stationed in Camp Black Jack,Kabul,Afghanistan. Then you will send it to this email address [email protected] Hope to read from you when you come back from Dusseldorf :* David. ---------- Sent From Military Wireless Network.

I checked the internet and read about phone scams , so I wrote him an email and told him that i think he might be a scammer. Since then i haven´t heard from him. I also checked the email headers and it says that the ip-address of his email is from California and Georgia. I don´t like hurting other people´s feelings, so i hope i wasn´t wrong with my accusations.

Is this a scam??

Thanks for your help!

Hi Angel66 and welcome to ScamWarners.

It is a definite scam - no doubt if you had contacted the email address that he directed you to (which is not a military address - you are right in saying that they would end with .mil), there would have been a charge to get your number registered.

If he does get back in touch with you, the best thing to do is to just ignore his email. Don't bother confronting him about being a scammer, he will just lie to you.

Please do not tell scammers that they are listed here - it will take them seconds to change their fake details and their new details will not be listed for any future victims to find.
