I was sent a message on Facebook about a week ago.
"You are sweet and pretty. I like your profile ... can we get to know each other....I hope you will reply soon....hugs and kisses....
His profile said he was a Sergeant Nathan Quintana as US soldier on deploy in Libya.
I replied cautiously - pointing out that I was probably years older than he was.
He replied that age made no difference - he thought of it as just a number - all that matters is that two people respect and love each other..... He wrote that he was single, as he lost his wife years ago. Before her demise they were blessed with a son by name of Wayne. He wrote that he wanted to hear from me daily.
He asked what was my work and my hobbies.
He did not really answer my questions.
At one stage I reposted my questions in one message and asked for an answer.
He apologized - said he was very busy.
He soon began to call me, 'my dear'.
In answer to a question he wrote that he communicated to me using a military-made communication device, which he used to communicate with troops.
I noticed that some of his messages were sent from a mobile phone.
He wasn't good at answering my questions.
He soon said that he wanted to hear my voice.
Within a week he asked me to send to email the US Army Communication/Welfare Center in Cotonou in Benin, and request the payment details for a Military calling card for at least $150.
I have had the header of one of the emails that was supposed to come from that Centre (written by 'Mary Anita Lovell' examined- it originated in Nigeria!
The "Center" sent me a flyer with an information sheet (water-marked with a US Army insigna) which I was to fill in and take to the Western Union office to send at least $150 for a calling card PIN for me to send to him for him to activate his military communication device to be able to call me. He said he really needed to have a long conversation with me - for me to see the genuine man he was and the good personality he had.
At this stage I was questioning him if it was real - and saying it sounded like a scam.
He tried to be so convincing.
He wrote a long story - meaning for security reasons all their wages are sent to the US. The have all they need in food and clothes - and it is the law because of security reasons a calling card had to be got that way (as above).
I tried to send the money - but there was a mistake (thankfully!) and only AUD$0.30 was sent (150 in XOF)
The "Center" did not explain that it was to be in US $ - apparently you can't send US$ there - I "should have" paid AUD$150 and had them convert it over there to their currency. Anyway that mix-up helped me to back out of the "deal".
He seems offended that I do not trust him - says I have left him lovelorn......

My question is - is that the situation for the US soldiers in Libya - that that is the way that people need to go for them to be able to communicate? I can't seem to find to answer to that question on the web.
He says other military calling cards that I could buy on the web won't work there.
I am without a doubt that that US Army Communication/Welfare Centre is a scam, and the whole thing is a scam.

Hi vebo and welcome to ScamWarners.

I am sorry to say, but the whole thing is a scam.

Soldiers stationed overseas are able to communicate with their loved ones, without the need for purchasing calling cards or any other communication means. I would guess that the department that you were communicating with were using a free email address and not an official military email address (which would end .mil).

Please do not tell scammers that they are listed here - it will take them seconds to change their fake details and their new details will not be listed for any future victims to find.

Thank you, Alan,
I have sent you an email - I've forwarded one of the emails from the Communications/Welfare Center to you, and I've put some other details on the top of their email.
