My father in law is currently being scammed by a woman in south africa. This has been going on for over two years. The main reason we cannot stop it is because she is using her real pictures and facebook accounts. She is married and her husband also has a facebook with pictures of them together, but my father in law has brain damage from an car crash and will look at the evidence we have shown him and then ask her about it. She will then lie to him and he believes it. He has sent her thousands and thousands of dollars and is now LITERALLY homeless, lives in his truck, lost his business, owes 9000 dollars is phone bills because of calls to south africa, and refuses to listen to reason. She fools him by asking for money in very small amounts, but it has added up over the many months. Because he is very lonely and not a dependent adult, we are not able to convince him to see the truth, or taking away his ability to contact her. At this point, unless there is some way we can block their communication or stop her from her end, we are going to attempt to involve Adult Protective Services. We assume she believes she can get away with this because he has been falling for it for so long. It is sickening.
Basically, has anyone had this happen? A scammer who is a real person in another country, using a very longterm romance scam to get money.
