I have been in contact with a guy Kevin Stanfield, [email protected], for about 3 months. Met him on Speeddate. He says he is a deployed soldier. his 4 year old sons lives in LA CA with his mother and sister while he is deployed as his fiance, Gerald's mom, died shortly after giving birth. He has never mentioned money or given me any gifts. However, we chat a lot of yahoo messenger. he always wants to see my webcam but says they are not allowed to have one. He says they are not able to skpe either. I've tried to trip him up a couple times with asking what time it is there...according to the world clok i use his ansers have not been consistent with nigeria or African origin but time have been off. Recently he stated he is going to be offline with no contact for about 8 weeks and then home on leave a month before coming home for good. Anyway he has not directly asked for anythign including money as always assures me he undrstands my skepticism. I have had trouble getting the full header in the email, but he gave me thisinformation for a sat phone service to maintain contact with him while he is away on this "mission". the email address he gave me was sat2phoneservice.us.mil@mail. Thi is the response i got after giving his information that he gave me:

Sadly, I would say it IS a scam.

Look at the bottom of the Satellite Phone Service website he sent a link for - "Make a free website at Webs.com", pretty poor website for such technology!

Copy & paste the phone number on the website and you'll get another clue

Hello dreamseeker,

I'm sorry to say yes it is a scam. The story he told you and the deal about the sat phone is all very typical of a military romance scammer. The sat phone deal is all fake soldiers have access to phones.

Just stop all communication and the scammer will eventualy go away.

If you intend to impart some information to others, you might also be interested to learn a few other tidbits about a romance scammer's M.O.

1. They sometimes ask that you pay for their leave. No civilian can under any circumstances buy leave for an enlisted soldier. Leave is earned, and cannot be bought by any means. Any soldier who tells you otherwise is not a soldier, and almost certainly a scammer.

2. On their way to the airport to fly home to their new-found love, the "soldier" often gets injured in an auto-wreck (or any other equally sudden tragedy), and becomes hospitalised. Someone will contact you on his behalf, asking you to help pay for his healthcare bills. The same applies for a family member of his, whom he has gotten you emotionally attached to. This is typical romance scammer behaviour, and a very cruel trick to extract money from his victims.

3. The only e-mail domain used by the US Army is @mil.com, indicating an official military e-mail address. Any others, including ones such as @armymail.com or *any* other, are not genuine.

4. If the soldier sends you poetry or any other thought-provoking material, copy and paste it into Google and you're almost certain to find he's lifted it from somewhere.

5. The pictures they use are always stolen, usually taken from a soldier's Facebook or other social networking profile. In reality you are probably dealing with a young black man, probably from Nigeria or somewhere else in West Africa.

Hope this helps.

^It's not mil.com; that has a private registration. The Army's domain is army.mil.

@dreamseeker, glad to help and you're more than welcome.

@vonpaso xlura, my bad. But still, the scammer would not have access to an e-mail address from either domain. As well, the headers and the e-mail body can often reveal a lot. Even a little bit of knowledge to a would-be victim can be the difference between them being scammed, and not.

Thank you very much dreamseeker for posting this info as I too have been in contact with this scum claiming to be Kevin Stanfield. He told me the same exact story but I too got suspicious when he wanted $229 for a sat phone. I have been in contact with him since August 1st till current. Same story. But said he needed $100 to eat in Nigeria cuz his mom had a stroke & he sent his $1000 allowance home for her Medical bills. Doesnt get mad when I tell him I can't but I see he's online 24/7 so I have a feeling there's more than 1 involved & they take turns. I decided yesterday to google his name & put the word scammer after it & found your story! Thank you there is a God!! Super glad I wasted nothing but time talking to this Scum & will just ignore his yahoo messenging. Thanks from the bottom of my heart & Life goes on :)
