Information on romance scams and scammers.

I met this guy on Zoosk, and after a couple of emails he professed his love (unconditional love) to me while at the same time was telling me that he was traveling to South Africa for an engineering project. The picture of the guy was dreamy, I mean he was hot! And then the emails he would write wow! Now, I have not been involved in a relationship in a while so this made me dream of a probable relationship. Then it was as though about to hit. About 10 days from initial contact, and him telling me (with terrible english grammar) that he was in the last stage of the bidding process and that the government of South Africa required a fee of $35,600 to be paid by the contractor I realized he was in his way to attempt the scam. He said he had about $29K of and that he would appreciate if I could assist him in raising the needed $7.6K to what I initially replied how can that be??? That's when I realized his English was not that good at all. Anyway, I asked him for a number to call to verify this information if I was to help him and that I also required a picture of his face at that time as he was, to which he continued to say he was away from his computer. Never the less, I kept on asking for the darn picture to make sure he was the guy from the initial picture that he had sent me. He emailed me some site pictures and told me he was the one guy with his back to the camera, I was really? He must truly think I am an idiot. At this point I knew he wasn't the guy but I also knew he was a completely different race. However, he messed up. In one of the pictures I was able to see the U from the University of Miami, so guess where I will be soon? Yeap, at the U of M asking around if anyone knows him. When I told him I was broke with no money, he was offended and such. What a tool! And I also knew there was no such fee, as I am in international sales. If you have been scammed in this way, contact me and I will help you. This guy thought that me being a single mom of 3, and a successful woman would give up a few dollars to be with him. Not in this lifetime. https://mail-attachment.googleuserconte ... 4rvsRrMFPA
He goes by eddy first and signs his emails as Ed or nothing at all. Please beware...

welcome latindesigner78!

As you already know, this is a textbook scam. The person behind the letters is African, not American. The highly romantic emails (undoubtedly with better English) are most likely copied from romantic letter/poetry sites like lovingyou.com.

He doesn't know the person in the photos--he just stole random photos off the internet. As far as going to the university to look for the real person goes, it really wouldn't help you much. The photos could be several years old, and the person in the photos doesn't necessarily have any connection to the school--he could be one of hundreds of thousands of visitors that have been at the campus seeing friends or family, or even attending sporting events or campus activities.

My Dearest in heart,

My life is about to change for good but this problem I share with you is strictly confidential between you and I and I am still afraid of sharing this problems with you for I am afraid it might be the end of our good happiness and mutual love plus understanding but I don’t have a choice... I am not a kind of person that knows how to tell people my problems, but you are the closest person to me right now....I feel disappointed in me but this is for the betterment of us...I have tried all avenue but all to no avail, it’s you I am counting on because you are my best friend and my only true love...

Just to let you know, you make my heart pound so fast and I can't even catch my breath. You give me goose bumps all over my body and you are all I think about. I have never had a love like this before and I have never felt this way. I want to keep you forever in my heart... Honey look at the amount of people that I was in this bid with, from 20 people to 4 left. And now yesterday I defeated all of the other 3 and I am at 99% chance of winning the contract ...

However , after all contract meetings and presentations I am about to be awarded a US$39M contract which I am getting 25% of the US$39M as contract commission ...Honey I will no longer be afraid of losing my home in Venice, Italy which I am about losing, because I did take a loan some time ago....I will remember that there was one woman called my sunshine , my baby doodle , my motivator , the woman that mended a broken heart ...The woman I will love forever till death do us part ...

Honey, my heart is broken; the government of South Africa requires a CONTRACT CLOSING FEES OF US$35,600.00 to finally close the contract. I never envisage that the contract closing fee could be that much. I am low on cash, what do I do? Honey I am very upset as I type this email to you and I have 3 working days to raise the money. At the moment I have about US$28,000.00 in my suite case and I will need US$7,600.00 to balance it up and have the deal closed. I have never done a contract this big in my whole life as an engineer and never did I think the contract closing fees was going to be this much. At the moment, I do not have a means of raising that amount.

I need a total of US$35,600.00 to close the deal ...

The CONTRACT CLOSING FEES include the following as mentioned below:

1)Recording Fees, paid by the contractor , charged by a governmental entity for entering an official record ...

2)Document or Transaction Stamps paid by the contractor , charged by a governmental entity as an excise upon the transaction and contract payment check .

3) Survey Fee for a contract survey structures paid by the contractor to confirm lot size and dimensions and check for encroachments. Required by institutional/commercial lenders...

Once I am able to pay the contract closing fees of US$35,600.00 the contract will be awarded to me and a check of US$39M will be issued to me. Sweetheart, I can’t wait to have this whole thing sealed, because as you already know, I am retiring (working from home) after completing the contract. Honey I need your help here...This contract is for the betterment of you and I ...I need your help so that I can raise the US$7,600.00… I will be glad if you can assist me to finalize this because I know you want the best for us and this is my moment, please don’t let this opportunity of a life time pass us by...Please kindly assist me with money so that I can close the deal immediately, as we will be celebrating together.

I know that now the miles separate us, the bond we have is far stronger. You are the very one I have spent all these years looking for. You make me smile. You make me laugh. You make me whole. I cannot describe the giddy feeling I have when I have thoughts of you or even when you cross my mind. I am so amazingly happy and content and forever I want to spend my life with you, in your world, in your family, and in your arms.

Here is a song for you...

I hate to admit it but I just received this very same email this morning from "Jack Robert" We've been chatting for two weeks and it got hot and heavy very quickly. We couldn't meet in person right away because he was going to Johannesburg on business.

He sent me endless photos and he's hot..really hot. Wrote me beautiful texts and emails and then this morning. My radar went up immediately, headed straight to google and found your post. I wanted to throw up. I consider myself to be a smart woman. I can't believe I got taken like this. He claims he has a 15 year old son named Lucas but keeps "forgetting" to send me a picture of him. He claims his wife died during childbirth 3 years ago and he lost his wife and baby. ....I feel stupid for getting in the far, but I feel even more stupid for still wanting to believe it's true.

Hi. I was at the online dating named skout when i meet this man (Terry Smith) he made me truly believe to him. He asked my email address. And so on he sent me a mail With photos with his co-soldiers introduced himself as a sergeant officer assigned from syria and he will be retiring next month. After 2weeks of our conversation, he told me that he is very happy because their general announced their retiring date. And because of their good work they will receive a $600,000 dollars each as a reward of their intelligent work. And he said he dont have a wife and I'm the only one he can trust. She told me that he loves me so much that's why he will send me that money at the united nation diplomatic courrier. After i gave my full name as he asked, he told me that he already sent the package with the money he mentioned. And I received the email of united nation diplomatic courrier saying that terry smith already sent the package to them and on aug.9 that man named robben frank will personally come here in my house to give the package that is why i was doubt. And search for the united nation diplomatic courrier and i saw this scammer.I'm still lucky I found out the truth .

Lisa5th and Eva5555, the hard truth of being online and dating is you have to learn who you can trust. Scammers know our vulnerable spots, how we want to be loved and treated like we are important and cherished. We want to hear that so badly we forget to see the signs until our hearts have been hooked and then, when we know the truth, it hurts. Both of you now see. You were smart enough to seek out the truth and you should be proud of yourselves for that.
And I understand about the pictures. That is why they chose them. Who doesn't want to find themselves in the middle of a romance with a hot guy? I was really taken in when I got my scammer's pictures. How dare anyone think I didn't deserve to be with someone great who looked like that?
You have both learned a lesson and I hope you really study the advice given here. Scammers hide many ways. Stick to seeing someone you can meet local and in person. Remember not to be scared but to check things out, like you did here. And take time to heal from the experience. It's a hard lesson, one you won't soon forget, but it will make you stronger as a person.
