Welcome Reporter333,

This is actually a pretty common scam format these days. There is an informational topic describing it here:

http://scamwarners.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=6527

Just a little clarification, though:
The scammers are not, and have never been, real army personnel. This particular scam format is typically carried out by African scammers. Some scammers use made-up names, while others will use the name of a real soldier. The scammer simply steals photos and names from online--facebook or myspace pages, news stories, sometimes even obituaries. The scammer does not know, and has no connection to, the soldier in the photos he is using.

The person picking up the money is what is known as a mule. Sometimes this person is a knowing accomplice, who is collecting and forwarding money for a percentage of the profit. Other times the mule is actually another victim, one who has been convinced that he/she has a legitimate job facilitating payments, or a victim of a romance scam, who believes that he/she is helping a boyfriend/girlfriend to collect a legitimate debt.

No, they are not real army personnel. Just some silly scammer tossers telling you a convincing lie. If you scroll to the top of this page, you notice the site search function. If you type in the words satellite military, the results are amazing! I counted 8 pages came up on the screen. It is a well worn scam format I'm sad to say. They all follow a familiar theme.
