Information on romance scams and scammers.

I have been communicating with someone for two weeks now. Really need to know if I need to be wary.
Here is one of the e-mail headers, I am amazed if it is at the length and depth that would be taken. . . lot of Face book links etc. He is from Santa Barbara, CA I hope he's real. . . .. Thank you,

I'll try and reason with you baby and of course we can go on to the next stage of our relationship. I really do like you and was really in love with you and still think I am right now. I have had this type of relationship before and maybe this is why I'm not really seeing a perfect sense in you so far, maybe it's because this is new to you baby. I hate to hear you get advice from your ex just like you told me when we were having a chat on yahoo yesterday. I thought your still in a relationship with him kinda but I so want to be wrong about that feeling. I'm not trying to be hard baby cos I'm the most simple man you'll ever meet, I just try as much as possible to be sensible and see senses in whoever I'm dealing with even my co-workers let alone a woman I want to have as a wife.

Hmmm what I need to make me feel secure???? what you can do without your words to re-assure me??? Well I wanna send Kay some money for her sick aunt today, I wanna send her 1500 cos she had asked me to help her with that. I'll send her half of that and tell her my woman would call her to do the rest for her today. I think I'll really be rest assured that way that u dont feel your talking to a computer or a phone but a man you care about and love then I'll know for sure we are on the same page if you send her the other half, her aunt needs that for treatment.

I will reply to your mail often and find time always from my busy schedules, not gonna be long anyway and we can have things going. I have three flight plans for today now and will text you soon. How's Crey by the way? He looks cute, I like him. Have a nice evening I think.

Xoxo,
Jeff.

Also the woman I was supposed to send $ to is Kay Dalton from Greenville SC

Welcome here fishburger.

No, he is not real. Thank you for posting the header too, it shows the ip of the sender coming from Nigeria. The email is clearly a scam with the usual format, the target being asked to send money for/to a sick family member/relative.

Being a victim doesn't mean you stand alone. We're here to help you.

man you care about and love then I'll know for sure we are on the same page if you send her the other half,

It's the classic "fall in love fast" caper and also to a scammer love=money. Also scammers never use names, they always say baby, honey etc except yours in the last line pops in "How's Crey by the way? " as an afterthought. It's easier when you spend hours writing to hundreds of potential victims. I do note it's not a prepared text, and the cut and paste rubbish will come later-not that you should continue to contact this criminal- but say nothing and depart leaving him stuck for words.

I have also had many other e-mails with him using my name, but who is the man in the picture? Is there a way to find out?
by fishburger Tue Nov 13, 2012 8:34 am
Also what about the woman..... Kay Dalton she is a real person what to do about that?
by Dotti Tue Nov 13, 2012 9:43 am
As Began said, this is textbook scam. The writing definitely tells me that he is African.

Scammers often use terms like Baby, Babe, Hunni, etc. excessively--even if they do use your name at times. They do this for 2 main reasons.
1) To further heighten the illusion of a romantic relationship.
2) To allow them to copy their scripts and use them on another victim with less effort and less risk of mistakes (scammers have been known to forget to change the name when they send it to someone else.)

As for the man in the pictures--he is just a random person who is unconnected to the scammer. It is very possible that he is married or not looking for a relationship at all. The scammer just found some pictures online--probably on a facebook, myspace, or photosharing page, since the quality suggests they are personal. The scammer has copied and saved the photos, so unfortunately, the real person has no way to stop him. We don't generally encourage searching for the real person, as contact from victims is typically very stressful for the real person and ultimately doesn't help them any.

The person you were asked to send the money to may be real in the sense that the name used may be real. But the story is not. You would not be sending this person money for a sick aunt. He/she would be picking up the money to forward it to the scammer. This person is what is known as a mule. The mule may be an accomplice, but more likely he/she is another victim, one who has been fed a different story (for example, one who believes they have been hired for a job picking up donations for an orphanage, or another romance scam victim.)

Most likely Kay Dalton is a mule who thinks the reason she's receiving money and forwarding it is something completely different from the reason the scammer told you to send money to her. Please forward all info you have about her (name, phone number, and address) to a mod, who will pass the info to a warner.

Ok what I am not understanding is do these scammers have the ability to invade peoples facebook indefinitely? as it seems as though the web goes pretty far. The links etc. How is that possible? and The woman's name is Kathryn Dalton, the address she gave me is 200 Pinecreek court ext Greenville Sc 29605 phone 864 534 6310

I believe the phone is registered to a Dalton Othella.

Thanks and the phone number from "Jeff" is 18056287317

I am also trying to find out if the Business they said he worked for is real it's named Pilots on Facebook, with about 26,000 likes. Is that also ficticious?
by Dotti Tue Nov 13, 2012 1:15 pm
The business is probably real. The scammer has absolutely no affiliation with them. It's no different than a scammer claiming he works for Shell Oil or any other legitimate business.

As far as the other facebook pages go--I would have to see the pages myself, but odds are they are fake.

It's pretty simple, actually. This is how it most often works.

Scammer goes to facebook or myspace, or photobucket or other photo sharing application. (Or he goes to a site like focushawaii, modelmayhem, or Starnow, for aspiring models or actors.) He then wanders through until he finds a page with photos that are suitable for his purpose. He then copies and saves all of the photos from that page (for models/actors, he copies their entire portfolio) so that he can send his victim "new" photos during the course of the scam. He may bookmark that page if it still active, so he can check back later to see if the owner adds photos he can steal.

He then creates a NEW facebook account that he owns. He may create a few fake accounts; for example, he may create one for his supposed child, best friend, family member, etc. He does this to make his additional characters seem more real and to give his main character some friends so his victim doesn't question why he has no friends at all. It's very easy, and not all that likely to be detected. According to an article in CNN in August, there are approximately 83 million fake or duplicate facebook pages. The scammer may copy the name and info of a real person, or he may make up a name.
For an experienced scammer, this is probably not going to take more than an hour--and since he is going to use these pages to scam multiple women, it clearly is worth his time.

kmarganski. Could we have some links emails and email addresses please. If you are "talking" to someone with stolen photos he is a liar and fake to start with and considering it's the internet, then you do a runner and vanish. No two ways about it, just leave and say nothing. You are dealing with a scammer.

Assuming you are talking to the person already mentioned in this thread, he is NOT real.

He is an African scammer. He uses other people's photos and fake names, and he establishes fake romantic relationships with women for the sole purpose of convincing them to send money. He tells lie after lie, and makes up whatever story he thinks is necessary to get his victims' money.

To him, these fake relationships are a business. The women he targets are nothing more than a means to an end. He doesn't care about them, or how they feel. He doesn't care if he destroys their families, or even their lives. He says whatever he thinks they want to hear. He will promise them everything in the world, knowing that he will never deliver (he couldn't if he wanted to, because he is not the person he claims to be anyway. He is not a middle-aged caucasian man--he is a young, black, African man.) He will not hesitate to make his victim feel terrible if he thinks he can get her to send money out of guilt. If she has children, he has no problem at all with using them for leverage--in fact, some scammers have actually gotten on the phone with the children, promising they were coming to be their new daddy.

The best thing you can do is cut all contact with him IMMEDIATELY. Do not confront him--he will only tell more lies, in hopes that you will believe them and he can still get money from you.
Block his email address and phone number, or just change email addresses yourself. Just walk away.
