Mother In Law Getting Scammed

Hi, I was referred to come here from "419 Eater", regarding my Mother In Law getting scammed.
She is refusing to listen to my Husband or myself.
My Mother in Law is staying with my Husband and I, due to her health.
She was scammed about a year ago, by a "Albert Aurielo". I proved to her that she was getting scammed, by a simple picture drop in google & came back it was a Italian Business man. She already gave him $1000aud.
A year later she's still talking and sending him money via western union to him and 7 others. They have sent her 2 checks one for $2000 & $5000, to deposit into her account then electronically transfer to them. According to the Australian Federal Police, this is money laundering and they are using her as a "mule". She is a pensioner and sends all 8 of them money every fortnight and getting loans to give them money. 2 of these men are pretending to be FBI agents, using real photos of FBI agents. I contacted the AFP, who then fobbed me off to the FBI sub office in Sydney, who then fobbed me off to the local Police, who then fobbed me off to Scamwatch Australia, who then told me to look into counselling.
She is using our computer, chatting on yahoo messenger. I've printed off around a hundred pages of chat. We found through this that she has given, not only my Husbands name and DOB, but his siblings, he has 10, as well.
These "FBI" agents are telling her to go to a mobile phone store and get 5 blackberry phones, so their "team" will have communication. They have told her that she is helping catch these scammers & her reward for this is a car, a laptop and $200,000. How she believes this is beyond me.

I'm sorry about such a long post, I'm trying to give as much info as I can, we have printed out ALOT.
We are going to try and get phone numbers of these guys, they ring her everyday.

Any advice or help would be most welcome. She will not listen to us and keeps on talking to them!
It's getting beyond the point of ridiculous.

I pulled the MTCN number from your post, in case anyone else tried to collect it. I was unable to track it online, however.

Why would the FBI use a free yahoo account?
Why would they need your MIL to buy them mobile phones?

She is obviously in denial, and easily persuaded by the scammers. It sounds harsh, but it is lucky that she has limited mobility at the moment or she'd get to the WU outlet more, and be awash with Blackberries.

If you can't persuade her otherwise, I'd disable the internet connection, maybe subtly, so you can blame the 'phone company, and quietly get another means of using the net, such as a iphone, if it is important that you and your husband stay online, and keep it a secret from her. Expensive but cheaper than MIL's scammer habit.

Some people really are 'victims for life', and just will not listen to reason - pride and the money they have already 'invested' overcome logic.

BTW, if you google [email protected], as well as this post, you find him trying another scam altogether on Black Eyed Peas fans.

Go and see the western Union franchise, with the information in you post - MTCN, receiver, question and answer and see if its too late to get the payment stopped. Also tell them what's going on - maybe they can't stop your MIL posting money, but if you'd made them aware, they may be wary that you'll hold them responsible in the future.

Unfortunately , the elderly are frequently scam victims and can be the hardest to convince its a scam .Reminds me of case here in the USA where an elderly woman sent her entire life savings to some supposed FBI Agents .

Maybe you could have someone from the Australian Police come and talk to her .

One of the pictures they are using are of my Mother In Law and my Husband's niece, I feel sick about this.
We are going to sit down and show her all this info and hopefully open her eyes, if she chooses to ignore this, nothing more can be done.
My Husband is going to the Western Union post office, today after work, to inform them of what has been going on. We are also going to try an get the $5000 check they have sent to her and pass it on to the local police.
When I spoke to the FBI sub-office in Sydney, they informed me that Agents do not use instant messengers, which we already knew, but Mother In Law won't believe.
Going through past conversations, she has given plenty of information regarding the Family, including what we all own. One of the "Agents" even told her to sell her Daughters car, steal things from us and pawn them. We have lent her money in the past to get food or medication, only to find out (going through the conversations) that she has lied to us and sent the money to them via Western Union, NEVER again. Funny how they all say not to tell the Family that they are talking, to lie about them asking for money and what she needs it for. The amount of money she has given them is well over $15,000AUD!
They are all starving, locked out of their Hotel Rooms by Management and thrown in jail and being beaten by the police, their Daughter is dying and needs a life-saving operation and all their "lawyers" have yahoo emails.

It's beyond a joke and I find it unbelievable that some of these conversations/scams have been going on for 2 years or more.

I really can't thank you enough for your help. If I find out more info, emails, phone numbers etc, I will post them on here.

Hi, Just thought I'd give you all an update.
We confronted my Mother in law, armed with all the info, that you found (thank you so much!)
Also, email headers, proving that they were not who they said they were, including the real people
Behind the pictures that the scammers used.
Her response, "I knew that you'd (meaning me) go through all my contacts"
We said your using our computer, and with your history of course we did.
We removed yahoo messenger off the computer, thinking that would be it, call us stupid!
My Husband caught her on the computer at 2.30am, when we were all asleep, she downloaded
Yahoo messenger and was talking to them. So we are disconnecting the Internet and pass wording
The computer. We really thought after showing her everything, she would wake up to herself.
Even after being shown that a picture of her granddaughter was being used by a scammer.
She's refusing to tell her daughter about that, so it's left to us to be the bad guys, in her eyes.
We are also telling the rest of my Husbands siblings, not to allow her to use their computers.
She doesn't have the Internet or home phone at her home, due to the thousands of dollars spent
In calling these scammers. We can't do anymore. We feel so angry and hurt, that she believes these
Scammers over us.

We are pleased to help.
You need to go to parental controls on your browser. You can block websites such as the Yahoo download pages. Not only that you can set controls that limit the hours of use and password protect the accesses. If you have a password to logon to computer use it, and do the same for Mother in Law, only allow her access that you can control. You can be very specific about blocks and while you may want Yahoo yourself you can ensure there is no access from Mother in Laws section.
I am sorry to seem so sneaky about it, and whatever you do you will get the blame I am afraid, so try to be a little bit subtle about what you do as I am sure you will be.
