Information on romance scams and scammers.

So, my mom is going through a divorce, and decided to go on PlentyOfFish and Christian Mingle. She met a guy named Mike Anderson (bald white guy) who apparently lives in the US, but studied abroad in England, and now is doing business in Nigeria (selling cars or something) and will be back once his business is concluded. They have been talking since the beginning of October this year.

My first warning sign was just the word Nigeria. And the fact his English was really strange. Second was his sob story or his wife leaving him for someone with more money, and he is now a single dad of a 12-13yr old boy. Third, he told my mom he was hungry and out of money, and got her to send $200 to him via Western Union! And he will pay her back and more. Fourth, she always has to buy calling cards to talk to him. And that he deleted his dating account right after she started talking to him.

She loves him, and has become very private ever since my family brought up our concerns. She believes he is a real guy and is the person she has wanted her whole life. It breaks my heart to prove her wrong but she cannot afford to send some stranger money after a divorce or potentially put herself in danger.

Am I too paranoid or is this really a long term romance scam? I am in the process of obtaining his pics to post, but he goes by Mike/Michael Anderson, and uses a Yahoo account mikeandsway I think.

His email is [email protected]. Spokeo'd it and the IP address is from Sunnyvale CA and people have said they have been scammed from it...

And I would agree it being a scam.
re: he was hungry and out of money, and got her to send $200 to him via Western Union! That sounds like the first sweetner for the trickster. I presume that was the first money request? Sending funds via WU is great for the scammer because the transference is quick for them. Once money has been collected, wave bye bye to it because no recourse is available to you.
re: And he will pay her back and more.Well, no and the trickster has no intentions of.
re: and now is doing business in Nigeria One has to wonder why a supposed business man is asking money from people? The fact the dating profile has been removed quickly is also not a good sign. And her becoming very private is exactly what the scammer wants I'm sad to say.
