Couple of weeks ago I was contacted by an Us Armysergeant inLibya
He said to me that he is 54 years old andin two months he would be retired
At the first glance, his name was Tomas Caran
Later, he sent me two messages telling me that he did not have wife, had a son six years old and he did not have any family in USA
It's ok
But two weeks later he said to me that he needed 100 dollars to send to his son in USA and who had a car crash and was very bad n the hospital
I said No! You are scam, a fake
He fought and deleted his emal address
Ten days later another US Army military, now in Afghanistan 50 years old, ctacted me on Date.com and I did not want any contact with him and I said about Thomas and he convinced me to continue chatting with him
But, something was strange for me because his name John Wood is 50 years old, widower, one daughter 17years old who lives n USA with a care taker and he does not have family
We were very well when yesterday he said to me PLEASe, can u help me? Something strange happened to my daughter and I need you go to USA to help her
I said: what can I Say at immigration? Never met your daughter before
So...I said him hat I would not want anything with him and he said me that he only asked me i could help him
But as I could not go to USA I could send 300 dollars to he care tAker
I said NO
Today, he said me

Forgive me and forget it, u don't need to send Any help and I love u

I don't know what I can do but confidence is a thing that I don't feel anymore
Please, what can I do????

He is a scammer just like the other one, drop all contact with him he is trying to guilt you into sending him money. This is how they make their money.

There is no way he wouldn't have anyone at home who could help him out, of course if you ask him this is what he will tell you but it's a lie. If he had such a personal problem he would go to his commanding officer for help not someone he had only met over the internet, if he was a real soldier, which he isn't.

I know it is horrible to think of the low down lies these people can tell you for the sake of a few bucks but rest assured it is a scam and you are doing right by not giving him anything.

If you post an Email of the new guy with headers we will be able to trace where these Emails are coming from and I'm guessing his Email wont originate from where he says he is. And even if it does it is still a scam if he asks for money and I'm sure he will but it will help put your mind at rest.

Drat, if he is using Gmail we wont be able to track his location because it strips the IP out of the Email :( has he ever contacted you from another EMail address? Gmail is about the only major Email provider who does this. Bringing up the headers varies depending on who your Email provider is. Who is your Email provider? (don't put your full Email on this forum just let us know the provider i.e. Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail).

Have you ever been given a phone number for this guy? Post up his message anyway you can usually tell by the type of English used whether or not the guy is American. Have you ever had a phone conversation with him? What was his accent like? When asked to send money did he ask you to send it by Western Union or Moneygram? They are popular means of payment for scammers because they are untraceable and once picked up there is no trail and the money can't be recalled.

Be assured though whatever the answers it is a scam.

He told me about Paypal and Moneygram and I as I am not crazy said to him: I. Can send it if you give me the copy of passport from who will receive the money, telephone number address, everything
Ao, he said me We Can talk Later

Two of them have gmail and I use gmail
Another one is hotmail
But I was traveling and my gmail was with problem and I said to
Can u create a hotmail account and so we can chat?
He did not answer anything

When a man looks for love, he isn't looking for money. When a man looks for money he isn't looking for love.

A soldier in the army has a family - it's the army and his buddies. They will save his life, wash his underwear and let him eat their rations. They will give him any money he needs, but the army will lend him it if it's for compassionate reasons, or he can put it on his credit card.

If a soldier is short of cash he doesn't need to trawl the internet looking for handouts or, if he does, he's sitting in an internet cafe in Africa telling the same lie to every woman he can contact on the internet.

He's an African 419 scammer pretending to be a GI trying to steal money.

My apologies graceolsson for not writing clearly.

A 419 scammer is an African internet scammer. The number 419 refers to the Nigerian law relating to internet crime. They are very common and this site deals mainly with them, though they can be located anywhere in the world and may be from other countries. Unfortunately they are very common on chat websites/forums where people look for friendship/romance and they very commonly pretend to be US soldiers (known from WWII as GI's).

It would be very rare for any soldier abroad to be on any of these forums as they have family and friends, and they have their buddies/army colleagues who are always the first people they would look to for help. If you met a stranger in a bar you liked, if they asked you for money you'd know they weren't looking for romance and a US soldier doesn't need $200 or $300 which he could draw on his credit card very easily.

Anyone who asks for money or electrical goods in an internet friendship/romance is a scammer. You won't be the only person he will be trying to scam. If you tell him you will never send him money or goods, he will drop you, but you won't have lost a friend or romance - you will have got rid of a scammer and thief.

Grace,

Scammers can come from anywhere, but certain types of scams are much more common in certain places. This particular type of scam (posing as a US soldier and approaching people through social sites) is most often carried out by scammers from Nigeria or Ghana.

"G.I." means "government issue" and is a term used to describe a soldier or equipment.

The sad reality, there are thousands of fake soldier profiles created solely for the purpose of scamming.
Real soldiers who are stationed in or near war zones are way too busy and have too much on their minds to be active on dating sites. In fact, I have NEVER meet a real soldier stationed in a war zone who was active on such a site, though I have dealt with a huge number of fakes.

As Terrance stated, real soldiers have many options for getting money in an emergency (in fact, if his child had a medical emergency, the military would take care of it.) The US military does not take soldiers away from their children and then leave them with no way to get help--in fact, the military does not ALLOW single parents to be soldiers without having a written plan for how the children will be taken care of and how emergencies will be handled. This plan is reviewed regularly with the soldier and his superiors.

Even if this were not the case, someone who has lived in, and has a child in, the United States that has been left in the care of another would not need to ask strangers for money on the internet. He would have his own friends or family members (and even if he had no family, which is really not very likely, the child would have family on the mother's side too.)

This scam has become so common that even the US military has posted a warning: http://www.cid.army.mil/romance_scam.html

I bow to Dotti's superior and very detailed knowledge of the situation with regard to the US military. 8)

The conclusion is that this man has lied to you in every respect Grace and, if you ask him to explain, he will lie to you again. He makes money by lying.
