Information on romance scams and scammers.

My husband and I have watched every episode of MTV's "Catfish", and if someone is getting Catfished, my mother is. My parents have recently divorced after 30 years and this is her first attempt of dating. (To say that she is naive, is an understatement!) She joined ChristianMingle.com She is in contact with someone named "Derek Hoffman", living in Cincinnati, OH. My mother and I have a pretty open realtionship, and she has shared the 6 or 7 emails with me that they have exchanged. I will list the following "Red Flags" that I have noted, and the investigating I have done. If anyone can help me by thinking of something to investigate farther, I would appreciate it. Or if you have a similar story, I would love to hear from you.

What he caims:

Derek Hoffman
49 years of age
Originally from London
Lives in Cincinnati
Divorced 4 years
1 Daughter, Nicole M. Hoffman
Engineer

What I have noticed from his emails:

Changes wording to repeat himself, alot.
Uses lower case "i", unless computer capitalizes it at the the beginning of a sentence.
Many run-on sentences. Uses comma's in place of periods.
Over the top. Writes like a poet about love. Claims he is "in love" by email 6 or 7.b (They have never met or even talked on the phone. Only communication through emails or text)

Reg Flags:

His email is [email protected]. Usually, not always, a year in an email indicated birth year. This would make him 54 or 55 depending on when is birthday falls in 2013.

Looked him up on Facebook. His profile was created October 12, 2012 and states he lives in Queens, NY. He gives no information other than Engineer in the "About" section. 1 picture posted. He has 0 friends, and following 2 people: 1 from California, and 1 from Ohio. 1 person "likes" his picture and she is originally from Jamaica, and currently lives in Queens.

I also looked his daughter, Nicole Marie Hoffman, up on Facebook. I could not find a matching profile.

He gave my mother his phone number: 414-616-7733. This area code is from Wisconsin. I looked up reverse information on this number and there was no other account information given other than location and that it is a landline.

I searched all 3 pictures I have of him in Google Image. 2 came up empty. 1 picture came up with a hit from a "Birmingham Forum" with a post, from July 2012, from a lady named Marie-Luisa from Houston, TX claiming she has been talking with "Derek Hoffman" (all the same info given) and wanted to make sure he is who he really says he is. (Obviously I'm not the only one doubting this man.) But no one ever responded to her.I tried looking Marie-Luisa up on Facebook and Internet and came up with no real answers. Here is her post on the Forum:
"Hello Birmingham Writing Community:[/size]My name is Marie-Luisa and I am corresponding from Houston, Texas USAAfter reading some of your interesting posts, I get the feeling that you all are a small community, close knit and caring.Maybe you all can help me in my problem.I am looking for a Pamela Hoffman, her address is23 Brumswick, Handsworth, Birmingham, London, England, UKI am corresponding with her son, Derek Hoffman (by internet only)He says he is divorced (4yrs) and he has a daughter namedNicole Marie Hoffman who recently went on a visit to China. He is a handsome man around 54yrs old, blond curly hair, blue eyes.
His writings to me are the essence of a beautiful soul. I hope he is.Does anybody know the Hoffman family?I would like to verify that what he is saying to me is true, for I do notwant him to be a figment of my imagination, nor him be married.I would really appreciate any information you can find out for me.Warm RegardsMarie-LuisaP.s. I am sending an attachment with his picture ."

He asked my mother if is daughter could email her. My mother said yes, and recieved an email the same day. The email has to be from him. The means of writing are the same, same over the top, talks only about himself, and still uses lower case "i" unless the beginning of a sentence.
I looked up the IP address from his emails and from his daughter, Nicole's, email. Both IP addresses are from California, San Jose area.

Most recently, he deleted his profile from ChristianMingle.com. I think he is erasing his tracks; my Mom thinks that he deleted it because he is not interested in getting to know anyone else but her. He also told her that he got called out to an Dublin, Ireland for work on a Oil Rig, and may not be as available as normal.

Conclusions:

This guy is ALL over the map!! London, New York, Wisconsin, Ohio, California, communicating with another woman in Texas, and is now in Ireland!! (Oh, and his daughter was in China!)

His writings are over the top and very poetic. But on the otherhand, has misspelled words and grammer issues. (You would think an Engineer would know better.) He is gaining her trust by using words repeatedly like: Honestly, God willing, I have never felt..., etc.)

He claims to be an engineer, but does not work for a compnay. He is a contractor, and plans to start his own business soon.

Not sure what his "scam" is going to be. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before he has her even more convienced that all of this is true and has fully gained her trust. My fear is that he is either going to be asking for money soon or that he might actually meet her and either physically or sexually attack her. She thinks that he has moved around so much due to his job, but is about to settle down with the start of his own business. She also believes that the email from Nicole, is actually from his daughter. I have talked about all of the above with her and she thinks that I am acting this way because I don't want her to date. I have encouraged her to look up other profiles and see who else is out there. It's so frustrating!

If anyone has any information or suggestions, please contact me! My email address is <removed - dotti>

Thanks,
Crystal

Welcome MrsC.
The falling in love after the 6th or 7th e-mail should set the alarm bells ringing. Are you able to publish one or two of the email texts? If the occupation is stated as an engineer the spelling and writing should be better than you indicate. However having said that, scammers often simply copy and paste material into the email body because they become lazy. Is the text of the emails the usual wishy washy fluffy dialogue or do they write normally asking questions etc? I would be inclined to agree it looking sus.

Here are some of the lines in the email:

Your heart is my art gallery, and all i see there are beautiful, wonderful, awesome things.hope you had a pleasant night.Mine was wonderful, the thoughts of you took the better part of the night. What have you done to me?, i just won't stop thinking about you and you know,it's somewhat magical how the thoughts of you just won't leave me.

Baby, your heart speaks soft sweetness, and i'm lost in your magic, my heart beats within your chest, and i think of you all day long, and dream of you each night, i often think of your arms being around me, and i simply cannot express my delight when i do.

Baby, you hold a heart in your hands that now belongs to you now. Your love overwhelms me with such apparent gentleness. I marvel at how your unselfish ways have repaired a fragile soul, seeking out the desires that rupture my loving thoughts. You know loyalty consumes the essence of what we've truly become, and your affection soothes the impossible frustrations away from me, and trust has never had such allurement before now. Such an effortless soft touch creates a powerful emotion. Breathing gets difficult, the mind muddled with grace.

You're the only thing that matters to me now, you are what keeps me going, and if i have the chance, i will love to make you happy, to love you always, to comfort you when you are sad or sick, to take care of you in every way humanly possible, to give you pleasure, to cherish you now and forever. But until that day comes,i want you to know that I love you with all my heart.

UGH! I mean, come on! He never asks questions about her except, "How was your day/night?" It just blows my mind that my Mom is falling for this!! The last paragraph is from email #7. They have only been emailing since March 1st!

Yes MrsC. After reading all that waffle, your concerns are well justified I think. Not unless the guy is a poet? What happens when Mother asks some questions of and to the individual? Scammers love it when the target simply follows their script. Sounds like is what's happening here I'm sad to say. Has said individual, supplied any other photos, or just the 3 you mention? If you have more, do an internet search on them, often they will show in previous scams the photos were used in. Cannot find any mention of this Marie-Luisa from Houston, but plenty of Maria's with the same surname from the same place.
All I found on the phone number is: Phone Number: 414-616-7733,
City: MILWAUKEE, County: Racine, State: Wisconsin (WI), Time Zone: UTC-6, Service Provider: Bandwidth.com CLEC LLC - WI
Not being in the US myself, not really familiar with it.
Whatever happens, Mother must not send any money to the individual if a money request is received. An idea for you is scroll to the top of this page, where you see the site search function. Type in the word, engineer. Maybe show Mother the results that come on the screen? It's incredible to see over 190 pages of these engineer type scams.

@Mrs.C.

phone number 414-616-7733:
there is only an answering machine coming up
... this is Derek, etc...

the voice had neither an American nor a British accent and intonation respectively ...

it was no thick West African English either ... would assume the voice to be a French speaking native trying to speak English, lol

dropped him a line as I couldn't find anything about him
no IP as he wrote back from google

this came back
Hello xxx,

How are you today?,hope you had a pleasant night. Thanks for your email,i'm a little amazed right now, don't even know where or how to start...lol. it was nice to hear from you......

This account was actually reluctantly created on the insistence of my daughter Nicole, and my mom, but, tell you what,i'm glad i did...lol.I was browsing to see people that might be interesting to talk with, when i saw your picture and hesitated for one moment, and suddenly felt the urge to write you, though my body said no,but,my heart wouldn't let go,amazing you'd say...lol. I must confess that ,you look so gorgeous to need a social dating service to find a man...lol,and i bet you'd agree with me on that,or won't you?...lol.
typical script for scammers who don't remember who they contacted where ...
look what he writes, I never met him
...
I've actually gotten so many nasty emails from ladies on this site, and was contemplating closing my account when i saw your picture and got hooked, though i can't really tell what the attraction is right now, but, whatever it is,i hope it's worth it. Guess you might wonder why i'm still single, well,i'm single by choice. I caught my wife of 19 years cheating with another man
the typical sob story, heard that countless times
,and simply couldn't imagine me spending one minute with her again in my entire life, cos she irritates me. It was a very terrible experience for me. I actually made up my mind not find another woman, cos,it really made me wonder if there are still honest women out there, honestly i was so heart broken, but, my family and friends, thinks i'm being too hard on myself, but, she was pretty much the other half of me. I sure don't mean to bore you with the details, however,i grew up with very strict christian principles, and morals, and can never live under the same roof with an infidel woman,a woman of easy virtue,in all sincerity,i can not actually tell where i went wrong,or why in the world she would ever think of sleeping with another man,i have never cheated on her,and i've always made sure that she is never in want, and i can put that on my life, i get advances every other day from women, but,i never yield to their demands, and that's simply because i thought i had the most amazing woman any man would ever wish for, but,i was so wrong. Well, all i could make of what happened, was that we were not meant to be,cos,i know for sure that things happen for certain reasons, and when it does,i just don't bother to question why, instead,i pick myself up,and move on. I believe that there is someone, somewhere out there for me,i just hope i find her someday.

I don't really know why you are here, but,i'm here to find a good friend i can talk with and, possibly start a relationship with if things work out between us,who knows?...lol. We could be friends if you want, and you could tell me a little about you and what you are really looking to find here. Hope to hear from you soon.

Here are some of my pics, hope you will like them.

Derek.

the pics he sent look a little different than that one the lady from TX posted on

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, AND THANK YOU!!!!!!!

This is the EXACT first email he sent to my mom!!! And the same 2 pictures he included!!! I am so exicted to have proof now!! I'm going to show my Mom your findings tomorrow! I know she is going to be upset because she really thought this guy was real, but I am so grateful to have proof before she got too emotionally invested or taken advantage of.

I can't thank you enough for your help!!!!!!!!!!!

Sincerely,

Crystal

I'm so glad that you were able to get help here for your mom. Please do post any questions she has here, we'd be glad to answer them for her. For future reference, tell her to steer clear of anyone who immediately falls in love, and claims to be an engineer working on an oil rig - that's a favorite of romance scammers.
There are lots of other red flags, as well, some of which are detailed here: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=25 and here: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=3607

Well done looking out for your mom. :D

Have you sent a payment to a scammer with Western Union and now realize it's a scam? If the payment has not been picked up, you can cancel it immediately! 1-800-448-1492

Hi,

It seems like he is on LinkedIn now as well as that was where he contacted me, I am trying to find out how to contact LinkedIn to get his account closed as he has 75 people as his contacts and he has blocked other people from seeing it - who knows how many other women he has on there!

For someone whose first language is supposed to be English his spelling, punctuation and grammer is appauling. Here is the following information i have been able to get.

Derek Hoffman
49 years old
Born 6 Dec 1963
Born in London and lived there for 21 Years
Has a 21 year old Daughter names Nicole Hoffman
Divorced for 4 years, found his wife of 19 years cheating on him.
Is an Engineer who works on Oil Rigs
D&H Services Limited - does not exist
Supposedly from New York
Went to University of Phoenix while still living in London
E-mail Addresses: [email protected] and [email protected]
Telephone number as mentioned in the warnings above

I never called the number but was suspicious with the number and he was professing his love after 2 e-mails... Glad I never gave away any information, nor my telephone number.

From what I see, the more people who red flag the profile is the better option.

Hi Jolly Roger,

I had a look at the link you sent me but was unable to find the option to flag someone - not sure if they have moved it - I have removed him from my contacts list anyway - Problem is, I work in the construction industry and a lot of people connect with me because of the company I work for and you cant really do a thorough check before accepting an invitation.

Also - I think it is a good idea for me to post his message to me via LinkedIn - Just in case people want to check if it is a scam or not - I dont think he is a sexual predator but rather a person who is after money as I dont even live in the states.

Hello,

First off, i'd like to acknowledge the fact that you have a very cute picture,I crave your indulgence to pardon my invasion of your privacy, you can put the blame on your cute smile, you sure can consider that a compliment.

Well,i know this is not a dating site or friendship site but i can't help because of your irresistible picture, little wonder why i couldn't get myself to look away, you strike me like an interesting person, and i decided to leave you a few lines, and hope you'd write me back.

i'd really like to know more about you, and if you would please, we can communicate through regular email because i hardly come online here, you can send me your email id if it's ok with you, and i would consequently write you there, then we can communicate further.

Regards,
Derek

I'm sorry it was no help. That being the case, they've probably removed the option! Unclear as to why that would be? Here is something you could try, perhaps write an email to: safety at linkedin dot com
Not being familiar with the page I'm unable to login to look further. There would have to be some kind of reporting mechanism there somewhere.

Hi! I too have this going on with my mom but not only did this "Engineer" working on an oil rig who is originally from Texas who is widowed and has a young daughter, "Irene", tell my Mom that he just got paid 10 million dollars, he asked her for money and where to send the money: Nigeria... His spelling, run-on sentences, and not to mention CAPTIAL LETTERS are not how you would think an engineer would write his emails? I'm quite disgusted. His name on Christian Mingle was "Charles David" and email is ourdreams2013@yahoo but like your Moms fake bf, He too deleted his Christian Mingle acct and asked my Mom to as well. He says he's coming to see her and bringing her a promise/ wedding ring.

Has anyone heard of this "Charles David"? I want to catch him & prove my Mom wrong!
by Bryon Williams Mon May 20, 2013 8:10 pm
Welcome to Scamwarners JN916,

As you know, your mother is in communication with a Romance Scammer ( [email protected] ). You will never catch him because everything he says is a lie. He is using a fake name, pictures and free email provider. The only daughter he has is the made up one in his mind.

The only truth that he said was to send the money to Nigeria. Yes, he is in Nigeria. He is probably typing to her from an Internet Cafe. His age is probably between 16 to 30 years of age.

The person your mother believes she is talking with will never come to see her. He will promise to do so. The only thing that will happen is he will request money from your mother for various reasons. Things like he was robbed, mugged, lost wallet, in the hospital, employer did not pay him etc. If your mother sends him money. He will continue to ask for more. The cycle will stop when your mother is broke or she comes to terms.

Since you mentioned a ring. I wanted to tell you about shipping companies. The scammer may tell your mother that he has shipped the ring. Your mother needs to contact the shipper or the shipper contacts your mother. In this scam the scammer wants your mother to pay fees via Western Union or Money Gram to received the package.

Please contacta moferatorstor if you have a question or information about this post.

Please do not tell the scammer he is posted here.
