Yes, it is a scam. Do not send money by Western Union or MoneyGram to anyone you do not know in person and have met face to face. Thank you for posting this information.

This is a very common romance scam format these days.

You are not, and have never been, in contact with an American (or British) soldier. The person writing to you is a young African man who is using photos of a real soldier he has stolen from an innocent party.

Leave requests and fees like this only exist in the imaginations of African scammers.

If you were talking to a REAL soldier:

-In the eyes of the US military, you have no connection to the soldier whatsoever. You are not married to him and you are not a blood relative. The US military would have absolutely NO connection with you. They would not share any information about him with you. There would be no communication between you and his superior officers, or any other function in the miltary. You CANNOT be a beneficiary for any of his benefits.
-He would apply for his own leave. You would have absolutely no part in the process. Not even a wife can apply for leave on a soldier's behalf.
-If he is eligible for leave (i.e., he has served enough time and earned it) and the timing is acceptable, he will be granted leave, and NOBODY will pay a penny for it. It's like vacation from a regular job. He would also get around 2 weeks maximum, and he cannot get more (and there is no way to buy more leave either) until he is eligible again.

The MOMENT a "soldier" you met online asks you to write to the military, make any requests on his behalf, or fill out any forms, the one thing you can be certain of is that he is not a soldier, but a scammer.
