I know somebody who has been communicating with a woman named Elizabeth Clauss for over a year. Apparently she is a teacher for the deaf and works for Unicef. I have contacted Unicef today via email to ask if they know anything about her, but have not heard back yet. He has sent her thousands of dollars in order for her to "move to the United States" - the money goes to Nigeria - yet every day when she is supposed to travel something comes up (she has been arrested, in a car accident, her grandmother died, her luggage was going to cost more than she expected, she had problems with her visa, etc.). They have conversations about being in love and that they can't wait to see each other. She apparently hearing impaired, so they have never spoken on the phone or used microphones in computer chats, though he has been on video chat with her.
On her current Facebook account there are several photos, but she has only 47 friends, most of whom are male.
I looked up the email address on Google and it came up with some Russian scam website which I did not sign up for and therefore cannot read (when I translated it, it said something about having to register? I don't know. Not entirely tech savvy).
I am worried because this friend of mine has literally sent thousands of dollars to Nigeria to "help her out" and it is putting him in a difficult financial situation. Can anyone help me figure out if this is a scam, and if so, how to go about shutting it down? Help!
