What happens if you text any of these scammers? I can't find anything about this scam on the internet, yet I get hundreds of e-mails if I post anything in any of the personals sections of craigslist asking me to text them "instead". Some examples:

Hello, this is weird, never been on here, heard it was good for a quick meet up. I'd like something that lasts a little longer that that I guess....depends. gimme a text instead 9704637100

new to this area, moved for work, won't get into much more at this point unless we get to know each other at some point. gimme a text instead 4242317516

Hey, thought I'd respond. Won't say much here but I'll tell you more if I hear back. Just enjoying the day. just text me 7816893465

Anyway, I get tons of these - usually worded differently but all wanting me to text them. What happens if you text them?

wow, it's strange how nobody knows anything about the most prominent scam on craigslist. Guess the only way to find out is to text the numbers...

Welcome to Scamwarners anonymousone,

If you text them back. They will attempt to scam you. Steal your money or have you work for them as a mule which will lead you into the Judicial System.

Also, you can expect more spam text.

Please contacta moferatorstor if you have a question or information about this post.

Please do not tell the scammer he is posted here.

I wish I had a fake number that could temporarily receive texts.. like maybe a skype number or maybe there is a website that will forward texts with a throw away number? I want to see what they will say but I do not want to use my real cell phone number when I text them...

EDIT: Okay, I found an app called "Burner" which lets me do just this. I think it costs a little bit to use each time but I'm willing to spend a little bit to see what these scams are exactly and to maybe mess with them.

I'll keep this post updated with what I find out.
I used the free texts that come with the Burner app to send a text to one of the number. It took about 3 minutes for it to reply and it said, "contact me at <e-mail addy> for a pic".

Going to use a e-mail account that I use for such things (on gmail and behind a proxy).

Should be interesting..

EDIT (E-mail Reply): took quite awhile to get a reply from the e-mail I sent. It looks and sounds like a real person wrote it..

"Anyway, here's the pic I promised. I'm near downtown, just hoping to find someone to get together with. I'm not going to invest too much time in an email conversation at this point, been there done that, went no where.
And sorry for the run around with text and email, I suddenely have the ex texting and texting me and I'm mixing up conversations....lol....I'm so bad.....not really, I'm nice, just not to dicks. My phone needs to charge anyway.

Anyway, I'm 34, newly single, and work as a teachers assistant."

The e-mail address even looks legit and has "teach" in it. They didn't ask for anything (yet) so I'm still not sure what they are up to. Going to keep replying until I figure it out.

and finally the scam is revealed...

"Well I will give my landline number here and then we can work out a place to meet. However, I will need you to verify first, sorry, it's a pain I know but I'll feel a lot safer.

Here's the link xprofilex.com/karensaunders

I know the pics a little bold and may give the wrong impression but I'm not a hoe, I'm just comfortable with who I am. If you're comfortable in your skin then we'll probably get along."

I didn't even bother going to the link as I know it wants my credit card info to verify that I'm "of age" or whatever.

Well that's solved.
