Information on romance scams and scammers.

Hi,

I'm just new to the website. But only found it yesterday after my internal radar went off.

I was on a dating website, and had a message from a David Morgan asking telling me all the usual stuff

"Am a single man too looking for serious relationship and due to nature of my job i dont have time to be searching around for a woman but i need someone that will be care for me and pray for me and be Honest to me"

And several other things along the same lines, and this is in the first 5 mins. So alarm bells are ringing a little by now. He kept asking about my past relationships but was able to avoid giving any information.

So started to question him a little, sounding interested. He tells me he is from Brooklyn, New York. Serving for 15months in. Afghanistan. (Which thanks to another site I found out that no us military serve more than a year in a war zone but you never know)
He says he has one son, 9years old. Divorced for 2 years and his son stays with his ex wife and her new husband. But is looking for someone to spend the rest of his life with and look after his son. Both his parents are dead,5 years ago.

Now I'm not someone that has a English literature degree but the way he is typing some things just screams out wrong. For example

"baby my son is not suffuring anything baby my son is schoolling in brooklyn baby i divorce my ex wife 2 year ago and my ex wife get marriage to another man "

Keeps calling me baby, and I hardly know him. Not encouraging him at all. Just asking questions to see how far he takes it or what he asks for.

I'm not. 100% that this guy is a scammer as he hasn't asked for money etc, but I'm 90% of the way. I have looked at the pics he has on the site and saved them, but don't have scammer over them yet or I would upload them. But the pics don't look like a 39 year old. And I'm sure there is a name on the equipment t that says Fort. Like I've seen on a lot of military guys gear it has there names on it.

But he asked me to use yahoo messenger as it was easier. So set a brand new one up, which is not related to any of my own details.

The email address he is using is [email protected]

Not sure if anyone else has come across this guy.

It's so sad that there are people out there that pray on individuals like

Elaine

Thank-you for posting the story D. It certainly sounds like you are in contact with a scammer. If said individual has sent an e-mail, checking the header will show a group of ip numbers. And one of them will probably point to a west african country. If it's only chatting on the IM thingy, the scammer knows chats cannot be traced. Did you mention it hasn't asked for money!? Don't worry, as sure as the sun will rise tomorrow, a money request will be forthcoming from it soon enough. Just make sure you keep your purse zipped up tightly. When it realises you are sending no money, it will disappear as quickly as it appeared.

It is 100% certain. It is definitely a romance scammer. The reason the writing seemed "off" to you is because the author is not American. The samples you posted were enough to confirm that, as he makes mistakes that are very much consistent with an African author.

The use of terms like "baby," besides being annoying, is also typical of an African scammer. They do this for 2 reasons: 1) to accelerate the illusion of a relationship (the faster he can get you to believe you are in a legitimate relationship, the sooner he can ask for money) and 2) because he is lazy. He plans to reuse those same words on other women. If he uses your name, then he has to go to the trouble of editing those words for the next woman, and if he forgets to change it anywhere, he will arouse her suspicion. But using "baby" means he can just copy and paste the words with no editing - quicker and easier.

What you are doing (playing along) is called scambaiting, and it is something many of us here do. We have an entire site dedicated to baiting, 419eater.com. It is important to bait safely, and when your dating profile is connected to your real information, that is not considered safe baiting. Please do check out eater for more safety info, and if you are not completely safe, just cut off all contact with this scammer.

Posting the messages he did send you in their entirety will also help, because as I mentioned above, he will reuse them.

Just another note: In addition to what you have already discovered about the length of tours, soldiers in Afghanistan have many responsibilities and worries, and they are NOT hanging out on dating sites picking up strange women.

Ok,

Did a bit more questioning after his "duty" which was only 5hours. Lots of stuff been said, still not asked for money. But will post some of the stuff he has said. Which out of curiosity, is spelt better so copied from somewhere... So I copied the passage and googled it. And low and behold found it almost word for word on another dating site...

He put:
he should have a desire to grow his career & be active in a professional field. We will have common goals in life & move forward with them together. he must be able to walk beside me in life, & be a very passionate & sexaul woman for me.
-----------------------
baby I also like going to the movies, theatre, concerts, museums or a nice restaurant. But I am just as happy staying home ..
------------------------

I'm a simple man who enjoy with the simplest things of this life, but I need a woman to share with me this nice life. .Serious relationship, I just want to love and be loved, Honesty, respect. Easy, pleasant, interesting I don't look for any adventure; I would like to meet a true woman.
-------------------------
baby The important thing is that we have understanding, respect and love for each other to share together needs, wants, desires and to make our plans, hopes, dreams come true.

------------------------
I want a woman that is not too hurt and not too hard to trust again and can give herself to a Husband to be loved and taken care of in a way that will bring a joy of life and an appreciation she will look forward to every day.
-------------------------
There is a lifestyle of marriage in the Lord that gives life and purpose to being married and can really be enjoyed,I feel I am a man of integrity and a family provider.. I think I am kind in heart and tender of soul.
-------------------------
baby Someone who puts butterflies in my stomach.. Someone who effortlessly makes me laugh. Someone who isn't afraid to make a decision if needed.
--------------------------
And several other bits of stuff. And then asked about my past relationship. And then said talk later and left and hasn't been on yahoo chat for over 13hours and funnily enough he disappeared from my chat list on the other site... :laugh-s:

I have out these things on here incase anyone else is sent any of this and is less suspicious than me of it.
If you don't trust what they are saying or seem to serious, romantically inclined or over the top. Then google what they say it will lead you to several websites.

This website has been a great source of info. And I just hope anything I have posted helps others out there.
It would be wrong to say its men that do it all the time, but I have seen several cases where it's been female names so there is no way of telling if its both sexes that are scamming innocent people.

Follow the advice from here and other sites:
1. Don't send anyone money, that you don't know
2. Military men are to busy serving their country to worry about dating sites, chat rooms and Internet access is bound to be restricted
3. I have found that no military personnel in a war zone spend more than a year there
4. They don't have to pay for leave or ask a stranger to apply for it, it's like most jobs they just ask for leave
5. Don't feel bad if you get suckered in, some of them are very clever and make lots out of people.

I will be keeping this site as a favourite as its full of info. I'm just glad my alarm bells went off when they did.
