Information on romance scams and scammers.

Hi,

My mum recently joined match.com and she recieved an email from David Brown. Not long after, David Brown's profile has disappeared from match.com and so have his messages. How Bizzare (we thought!). However in his email he says along the lines that "he's uncomfortable with match.com" and gives his email and phone number to my mum. At this point my mum is feeling lucky that she wrote both down on paper.

email - [email protected]
phone number - 3212459887

Anyway me at that point is suspicious because the number is 10 digits and he's left match.com.

Nethertheless I let my mum send a message to email saying "hello... i lost your profile... Don't understand your phone number...."

To which he replies the following;

>> Thank you so much for your email, am sorry I got my profile deleted on the
>> site because I don't really like it there and that was why I gave you email
>> address, am presently in the US for a business trip and that's why I have
>> US phone number, I should be back hom in like 2 weeks time, yes I live by
>> Aberdeen, and I really hope to know you better, I don't know how this will
>> sound to you but I will really appreciate it if you can get your profile
>> off the dating site too so that we can concentrate on each-other here
>> without any distraction from anyone on the site, I really want to know you
>> better and see how it goes, I guess we really have a lot in common......i
>> can't just stop thinking about you since I met you......guess u should be
>> preparing to sleep now, I hope to read back from you soon.....i will be
>> thinking of you all night :) xoxoxox

The following morning he sends this email;
Good morning! How was your night? I hope it was great? It's Ok, I think doing thesame as I have done will really make me sure you are not toying with me, am sorry if it sounds somehow to you but I just have to be honest about how i feel, you are the kind of woman I need to make my life complete and I really want to have a serious relationship with you and see how it goes, thinking about you brings me joy and happiness, it's really been a while I have felt this way and that is why I should thank you for coming into my life, I think am already falling in love with you too, I can't afford loosing you to someone else who may never appreciate you and that's why I really want you to get your profile off the site just as I have done for you......whats your plan for today? I hope to read back from you soon xoxoxox

David

Personally I'd bet my life it's a scam because he's falling in love extremely fast. As the saying goes "If it seems too good to be true, it probably is". Besides that I've done my own research and found out the business trip scenario is pretty common, using yahoo is pretty common also.
However guys I'd appreciate a second opinion not just for me but also for my mum as it will probably explain things to her better and more thoroughly. Also would you guys be able to explain why he insists that my mum should leave match.com.

Thank you.

You're suspicions are correct. Nobody falls in love with someone they've never met after one or two emails.

If the phone number was corrected, i.e. a 1 at the beginning for the U.S. then it shows as being an internet based number (VoIP), terminating in Florida. However, because it's a VoIP number, it can be directed anywhere in the world.

The grammar is distinctly West African and the profile he used will have been kicked off match.com. He'll have others on there though.
He wants your mum all to himself, so no other scammer gets there first.

May I ask why you need or rather what you can find out from it? (e.g Are you able to find the routing path from where the email is sent from this?)

We are able to sometimes see where the email originated. As in this case the email originated in Nigeria. A well known scamming area.

Allow me to translate with what he really means but won’t say…

Thank you so much for your email, am sorry I got my profile deleted on the site because I don't really like it there

Match deleted my profile because they discovered I had opened it using a stolen credit card, or because I tried to scam other women, and one or more of them (who probably had more experience with scammers so they recognized me right away) reported me. Luckily for me, Match didn’t tell the women I approached (and there were several) that there was a problem, but instead per their usual policy, they just deleted my profile and all messages.

and that was why I gave you email address,

Like many scammers, I knew it was only a matter of time before match killed my profile, so I immediately tried to establish off-site contact with as many potential victims as possible.

am presently in the US for a business trip and that's why I have US phone number

This is a VOIP number I use when I am pretending to be American. I actually answer it in Nigeria, though. I didn’t pay very close attention to your location (I don’t actually care where you are, as I never intend to meet you anyway) so I forgot to give the bogus explanation before you asked about it. I am also hoping you have no experience with scammers, because if you have a lot of experience, you will recognize my African English here.

I should be back hom in like 2 weeks time

I’m actually at home right now, in Nigeria. I won’t be leaving here any time soon. But I tell you that I will be near you in 2 weeks because I don’t want you to drop me, and I am beginning to prepare for the inevitable set of bizarre emergencies that will come up and keep me from arriving—emergencies that will require your money to fix.

yes I live by Aberdeen

For you I live by Aberdeen—for others I may live in New York, California, you name it!

I don't know how this will sound to you but I will really appreciate it if you can get your profile off the dating site too so that we can concentrate on each-other here without any distraction from anyone on the site,

I know that there are thousands of other scammers on Match but I found you first and I don’t want them cutting into my profits! And, if too many of them approach you, it will make you suspicious, and more likely to realize that I seem a lot like them.

I really want to know you better and see how it goes, I guess we really have a lot in common......i can't just stop thinking about you since I met you......guess u should be
preparing to sleep now, I hope to read back from you soon.....

Really I have no idea of what we have in common, nor do I care. But it sounds good. And I’m cutting this message off now because if I keep going, I might actually have to put some effort into my email instead of using a generic script I can send to anyone.

i will be thinking of you all night

….wondering how much money I can get from you.

It's Ok, I think doing thesame as I have done will really make me sure you are not toying with me,

It’s time to get down to business, so I’m just going to start with the usual routine of guilt trips and trying to make you feel like you have to prove yourself to me. Right now the way to prove yourself is by deleting your profile so that my competition doesn’t have a chance to chop my dollar (of course later the way you prove yourself will be by sending money.)
am sorry if it sounds somehow to you

I can’t even cut and paste properly, hope you don’t notice that this makes absolutely no sense.
I just have to be honest about how i feel, you are the kind of woman I need to make my life complete and I really want to have a serious relationship with you and see how it goes, thinking about you brings me joy and happiness, it's really been a while I have felt this way and that is why I should thank you for coming into my life, I think am already falling in love with you too,

Like many scammers, I love to throw around words related to honesty and trust, in hopes you will associate them with my character. I’ll also just string together snippets of romantic quotes (and do it badly) on the assumption that you will be so completely flattered by my so-called-love that you will fail to see how disjointed this is.
I can't afford loosing you to someone else who may never appreciate you and that's why I really want you to get your profile off the site just as I have done for you

I am really, really concerned about another scammer chopping my dollar—so much that I have had to try to get you out of the reach of others 3 times in 2 short emails.
whats your plan for today? I hope to read back from you soon xoxoxox

Now I have to pretend to actually be interested in knowing something about you, but I will then quickly sign off because I don’t want to waste a lot of effort, especially since I have no idea yet of whether you will pay.
