Information on romance scams and scammers.

Still not sure, but I believe he's a scammer. We started chatting around July 6, 2013. It started out normal, then we exchanged numbers, etc. Stated he had been married for 25 years, but found out she was cheating on him with her high school sweetheart and was spending all his hard earned money. However, now he's financially stable and he would make my life so wonderful. I have my own stuff, so I don't need him and I'm certainly not going to give anyone anything unless I know them for some time. He had roses delivered to me and then sent me his flight information so we could meet. However, two weeks prior to him coming out, he stated his land agent finally found him 70 acres in Italy and that he needed to head out and would be back in time to make his trip out to see me. Said, congrats, have a safe trip. However, one day after he claimed to arrive in Italy he says, can you do me a favour? I said sure, can you send me two laptops, via fedex and keep the receipts and I will pay you when I get to you. I told him I was uncomfortable with that, and his mood changed fast. Told him no I won't, but gave him information on how to purchase with his credit and I'll pick up. Set up and IPS account for him, etc. Still, nope wasn't enough. Got the don't trust issue and blah blah blah. I pretended I was torn, even cried because I can do that on a drop of a hat. I checked on his itinerary and it is legit, so I don't know what the heck is going on. However, he said we were done since I did not trust him enough and called him a scammer, etc. I may have lost a great guy, but probably not. Have to think with my head first, then the heart on this stuff.

Be careful everyone. Mine is different from most, because I did not spend a dime, however, roses were a lot cheaper than two laptops sent to Italy. Thanks mom and dad for my common sense and brains.

Actually, though less common, it is by no means unusual. We have encountered quite a few scammers (and this definitely is one) who have sent flowers (and for some reason they often like to send teddy bears) to their targets/victims. I say "sent" rather than "purchased" because the scammer didn't spend his own money. Scammers use stolen credit cards bought on the underground market to buy these items. So the scammer didn't actually buy you flowers--some innocent person who had his/her card information hacked or phished did.

It's fairly easy to provide "proof" of plane tickets without actually buying any--some airlines allow you to "buy" tickets but give you a certain time period for payment, and scammers take advantage of this. They simply place the order without entering a payment, and print/save the reservation information. A few days later, the airline cancels the tickets, but the scammer has already gotten what he needed anyway--fake "proof" to send his victim.

Just treat it like any scammer. Post some of the messages he sent to you here (especially early ones, and the ones around travel/laptop) as evidence and so that his script can also be searched, and drop him.

Here's the very first few. He emailed me daily, we talked on the phone daily and IM on Yahoo for hours every day until he made his quick trip to Italy. That's when it all changed. He gave me an address of via Saragozza 90, Bologna, Italy 40123 to send the laptops to.

Yesterday I heard from him again stating he was back in the states, however since I could not trust him, he could not continue with me. He sent me some really personal emails, but I won't share those, too many. I have now blocked him, hopefully.

He's also 56, Jewish, and from Chicago, according to his (now deleted, most likely because he was reported for scamming) jdate profile...

Unfortunately on the laptops it was a discussion on IM Yahoo and I deleted it all. The phone number he used is (630) 914-9710. Said he was originally from Germany and grew up with his Auntie. No siblings or kids.

I'd like to add, that his grammar was perfect and his IM was right on. He's good...The pics he sent, he's very handsome, normal looking. However, when I spoke with him, his voice sounded too young, so that was my first red flag.

Learned he's still on the move scamming. Here's a few posts I found. He likes to send roses and purchase tickets to make it appear he's coming out to visit.

A man calling himself Robert Ozil Wilson, German accent, met me on Match.com and worked me professionally over a period of 2 weeks to the point that he made me feel foolish for daring to be suspicious when he asked me to mail him some work boots and 2 unlocked android cell phones, for work in Ghana, Africa. Of course, he was going to repay me immediately, once he returned to America. And yes, he was flying straight to meet me in person. I'm embarrassed to admit I fell for this. And of course I've never heard from him again. I now have a Masters in Scam Artistry.
